Have people actually managed to watch this show?

I've started it numerous times, but never can seem to get very far...

reply

I've tried twice. I can't get past the first 3 episodes. It doesn't seem interesting. But it's up to season 5, so it must be doing something right.

reply

Yeah, it started 4 years ago. The original crew is still on their way to Ceres I think.

I watched the first 5 seasons for the first time this past month. Speaking as someone who was frequently bored throughout the first season and found myself questioning all the acclaim this series got, I eventually got hooked within the first few episodes of season 2 and found the series to deliver an unprecedented streak of near perfection and greatness for 4 seasons in a row. I now seriously consider The Expanse to be one of my all-time favorite shows and in contention for the greatest televisions series I've ever seen.

Interesting....
I thought season 1 was.... utter shit, with a decent budget.
Perhaps I'll watch season 1 recap somewhere and give season 2 a shot. I fear the worst though -
There were too many S1 lunatics who thought it was the best thing since sliced bread, so it had no reason to improve.

For what it's worth, I tried re-watching season 1 and my thoughts haven't changed. It's still the weakest season easily. My ranking of the seasons would be 4, 3, 5, 2, 1. The ending of Season 2 episode Godspeed is what got me hooked on the series, and the immediate following episode Home is one of the most intense episodes of sci-fi tv I've ever seen.

Some people are saying this is a good substitute for Star Trek, or something.

As much as I enjoy the stories told by Star Trek, Star Wars, & numerous other sci-fi favorites, having cut my teeth on the works of Clarke & Asimov set forth in a future devoid of artificial gravity, inertial dampeners, shields & faster than light speeds, finding such a well-produced sci-fi drama in a realistically extrapolated future still bound by limits of acceleration, vacuum, low-g environments & socio-political strife instantly clinched my interest, & I've been hooked since. Takes a minute to get up to speed with the dynamics between the different power centers, but that's mostly because it's been so well considered, many of the moves have to be inferred unlike with the heavy & often simplistic exposition found elsewhere. Toss in some protomolecule, & it absolutely purrs. It's like Space Odyssey Kubrick meets House of Cards meets The Wire.

reply

Yeah - that's basically the sort of reviews I read for season 1 - lol
When I watched it - I saw something else entirely.
It's like Nolan film forums - a cult of sorts.

Keep watching and you'll be blown away.

Blieve consensus, me, is this is the best SciFi serie since Babylong 5. For a vairity of raisons - for instace, realistic portrayal of spaceship movements, no ‘inertial dampers’, at one point it actaully shows a spacer subjected to 100+ gravity deceleratjon that rips his faceoff; plausibal physiologicle changes - one of the maign chacters isso adapted to low grav she can’t stay on an eart gravity planetary surface for long; interesting & wellacted cast, Miller, Holden, Amos, Avaserella, Naomi, Drummer, Ashford, etc., arouses curjosity of their backstories; several maign charcters are killedoff - Miller, Ashford, Alex, Johnson, Julie.

Only regret, me, is they had to rushcrunch the ending - but at least it was conclugded, not dropted.
