Among the best shows of the year

You’re the Worst‘s first season got at a lot of the darkness underneath relationships, friendships, L.A., etc. but it turns out that was merely the iceberg’s tip. In season two, the show dug deep into the minefield of depression as Gretchen suffered so profoundly she could hardly be bothered to stand up straight. Combine that with other problems for the rest of the small ensemble, and the basic plot description reads more dramatic than comedic. Luckily, the show also managed to be even funnier this year to match. The humor never coated over the sadness; rather they worked in tandem to get at something few sitcoms are capable of understanding. The reason we have cheesy moments with loved ones? Sometimes, it’s the only thing that gets us through this goddamned world.
