Dear writers, British people say SHOP not STORE!

I love the show but the episode with Jimmy's family is terrible and unfunny. The accents weren't accurate and the writers fumbled a few of the UK terms.

We don't say PANTS, we say TROUSERS. PANTS in the UK is underwear.

We don't say STORE, we says SHOPS. As in "After work I need to go to the shops to get a few things"

We don't say GROCERY STORE, we say SUPERMARKET.

My boyfriend says I'm missing the joke - the inaccuracies are deliberate and are SUPPOSED TO BE FUNNY. Especially the fact that each family member had a different accent.

Your boyfriend is right. You should always watch everything with him - it'll be more fun that way. 

The whole thing was a send-up of how Americans view British people, especially our tendency to think y'all are all of a class when of course nothing could be further from the truth.

"I won't hold my bread."

Having a "Brit" in the show, I would say that the opinion would have been raised that "this is all wrong" unless it *was* intentional, what?

You mean just like every time there is an American character on a British show and they are using British terms that an actual American would never use? I watch a lot of British TV and this has happened in every single show I have seen...I also find it kind of ridiculous when Brits complain about American actors doing sh#tty English accents, when most British actors do the same dreadful job (except Hugh Laurie and Kim Cattral and a few others of their caliber) so, it most
certainly goes both ways. It can definitely be distracting, but has never ruined a show for me, whether it was done intentionally or not.

Where did Madonna get that snooty British accent? She isn't fooling anybody; we all know she grew up in Michigan.

Madonna doing an English accent and acting? That's like two Jaden Smiths for the price of one!

A lot of people say store in UK so I'd say he's not wrong.

We don't say PANTS, we say TROUSERS. PANTS in the UK is underwear.

We don't say STORE, we says SHOPS. As in "After work I need to go to the shops to get a few things"

We don't say GROCERY STORE, we say SUPERMARKET.

Don't forget, also:
We don't say SNEAKERS, we say TRAINERS.
We don't say SOCCER, we say FOOTBALL.
We don't say CIGARETTE, we say FAG.
We don't say ELEVATOR, we say LIFT.
We don't say APARTMENT, we say FLAT.

"Apartment" sounds much nicer than living in a flat although it's basically the same word but sugar-coated.

reply

I've never heard a single English person say "store" when referring to a shop.
