I don't mean the characters in the show. I mean the people who were fluffing themselves over how "BRILLIANT" the show was for dealing with depression.
I think Gretchen's line of, "You fixed me." was a big EFF YOU to them. I mean, the show is SOOOOO realistic about depression - and all it took was Jimmy staying with her to make her all better.
Seconded. And add on to that the implausibility that no one had looked into whether or not Gretchen was even seeking help through medication of any kind. Weak, and every critic I read who stood up for the depression arc's merits conveniently glossed over these resolutions.
She was snorting Adderall, and I know that at one point they used to prescribe that drug for depression - just not to snort it.
I just find it BRILLIANT! that they were going on and on about how realistic it was they way they were portraying depression and that we were all wrong when we were saying how it was ruining the show.
But, as soon as she said, "You fixed me" they were gone - hopefully never to be seen from again.
Depression can come and go in waves, Gretchen isn't saying "I am forever fixed" she is just saying that thanks to his help she is better... for now. If you think that this line means "I am forever cured of depression" than you are just looking for a reason to hate this show.
Gretchen was snorting Adderall for the high, to help get thru the day. She was self-medicating. There's a brief scene in which you see her stealing the Adderall from Killian's prescription bottle. Quick aside- it totally makes sense that a neglected kid like Killian would have 'those' types of parents who can't handle a normal kid w/energy and look for a quick 'fix' like Adderall. Sad.
When Gretchen said 'you fixed me,' in the Halloween SF epi., she was trying to both placate Jimmy/his ego, and get him off her back in his efforts to 'fix' her. Anyone who took that line seriously either wasn't paying attention or should dumb down their TV fare.
What is the word I'm thinking of? Oh yeah. Bullsh!t.
She knew she was depressed and not just down in the dumps. She knew all about it. She knew he couldn't "fix" her. She knew all of this.
But then she is fixed because he stayed with her.
I've dealt with depressed people before and if you don't get them properly medicated, they don't just sit up one day and say, "you fixed me" in the same way as you'd say, "thanks for cheering me up."
Weak. Instead of being true to the show, they pulled the same TV sitcom cr*p that almost all shows do. They feed us backgrounds on the characters to explain why they are the way they are.
Boo-hoo. She's a b!tch because she was fat as a child. Aww, that's ok. We connected with you.
Next episode she's a b!tch again.
The beauty of this show in the first season was that we got to see all of them grow, without losing their douche-bag nature.
This season we got to see why Gretchen is like she is. Or that Jimmy is an immature azz because of his horrible family.
It stopped being "Your the worst" and now has become, "Well, it makes sense as to why you are so messed up."
You've been arguing this same tired argument in nearly every thread- last season was great b/c they were dicks with no reason given as to why they're dicks, and this season effed it all up by giving us back stories to explain their dickish behavior. Bad sitcom trope, blah blah blah, ad nauseum.

You're conveniently forgetting the flashback in S1 in which we saw Jimmy's proposal to Becca crash and burn (ergo- why Jimmy is so down on love, why he's drinking so much, why he's gone from pompous ass to downright dick). We saw Gretchen having a quarter-life(ish) crisis, and being dissed by her director booty call (why SHE's so down on love, why she's decided in a snit to chuck it all and move to NY). We even got some backstory on Des., Lindsey, and Becca that informed their current behavior and recent choices.
Besides serving the purposes of giving us a better understanding as to how and why Jimmy and Gretchen hooking up when they did made sense, this flashback episode gave us LOADS of information about the characters- who they are and why they behave as they do, to a degree, just as the 'Jimmy's family' and 'Gretchen's depression' episodes have given us info. about what makes them tick...to a degree. And by the end of S2 guess what? They're still the worst. It's who they are. They're sh..y people with problems and they'll grow and develop, and make small changes but people don't change that much. That's just a fact, just as its a fact that a person with depression is not defined by his or her depression. It's also a fact that S1's back stories demonstrated more of why they're both awful than S2 did. In other words, the exact opposite of what you've been arguing endlessly. Watching a poor hopeful Jimmy propose to Becca, only to have his heart stomped upon, made his actions at her wedding a bit more understandable. Does it excuse his awful behavior? No. But it makes the audience a bit more sympathetic to his character and behavior.
But I digress. The one point I'm hoping will make its way into your little basement hidey- hole is that you can now stop crying about S1 not giving us backstory/background/S1 being brilliant b/c there was no background info. given as to why Gretchen and Jimmy are the worst'...b/c you're wrong. You're wrong on SO many levels about the show, but at least now you can either be a big boy and find something new to troll, or you should at least modify your posts to include this crucial bit of your argument that you seem to have forgotten, dum dum.

Hey! You FINALLY got something right!!!

Yeah, because those for sure gave really solid reasons as to their boorish behavior.
They're still the worst.
Sure. That makes sense. Instead of dumping Gretchen the slug for the hot, exciting bartender, he stays with her. And Gretchen, is suddenly "fixed." And Lindsay growing up and doing things on her own.
Now, STFU, please. I'm tired of your stupidity and BS stinking up the internet.

Oh, I think we all got it, you have been repeating literally the same thing in all your replies, irrespective of whether the original comment even pertained to that particular topic. You're just short of copy-pasting the same words over and over again.
I didn't like the depression story line so much either(NOT for your reasons, I just thing it occupied too much time), but you know, just state your opinion and move on(like I'm going to), stop trying to hammer it into the mind of each person who feels differently.

LOL. It wasn't good, that whole depression arc. I will now always watch this show with a hint that it may (and probly will) take this tack again. I don't think they learned their lesson. I think they will try sh!t like this again.
I wonder how many viewers that aren't so vocal as we are, just. effin'. quit. Sadly, most viewers have the attention span of a gnat and won't tolerate that bullsh!t for more than a couple of minutes... and it lasted SEVERAL episodes. smh
I still want to stick with it because there is a brilliance to the comedy, which hooked me initially. The show has/had real potential, I hope they find it again. I await S03 to see the worst that these characters can offer.
_____________ Move along! There's nothing to see here
I don't think that she fully believes she's fixed, but I do think it was absolute cr&p that the whole time she kept saying that he can't but now pulls out that line.
I think it would have been better if she said something along the lines of, "You can't fix me, but because you stayed I want to try to get better."
I mean, it still would have been typical TV sitcom fluff, but it would have been better than the other cr&p.
That wouldn't have had the result she wanted on Jimmy. She wanted him to stop trying. If she said it your way things would stay exactly as they had been. But instead, with a single look, that this was crap was displayed to the audience.
"Nothing Hillary utters can be trusted. Even if on fire her screams would be disingenuous."
