So-so
Aaron Eckhart plays a man with a unique talent; he can recognise when people are possessed, and project himself into their dreams and force the entity out ('eviction', he calls it). He's hired by the Vatican to rid an eleven year old boy (Gotham's David Mazouz) of a demon. But this demon is one he has encountered before; it killed his own wife and child, and wants to kill him.
Eckhart's freelance exorcist is a burned-out, unkempt, wheelchair user; but in dreams he's an able-bodied, well-groomed, action-man. Mazouz starts out as a caring child, trying to cope with his parents separation; but becomes downright malevolent once he's possessed. Both actors portray the dual aspects well. The supporting cast are also good. The letdowns are the obvious low budget (just $5 million - it looks like a TV episode), the lack of originality (I've seen it described as 'The Exorcist meets Inception'), poor action scenes (e.g. nightclub fight), and an almost complete lack of scares; I don't think this could have been great, but it could certainly have been better.
The ending can be taken as a hint to a sequel, but I doubt very much there'll be one. 5/10
