This is a fair observation, and I particularly noticed it in Trumbo. Cranston definitely does a lot of random 'mouth acting'. But look at the guy that played Edward G. Robinson - he 'mouth acted' to imitate Robinson's characteristic down-turned gob. As did Dean O'Gorman who jutted out his lower jaw to give him that Kirk Douglas tough guy look.
