Immediately thought of Michael Moore too....rich guys living luxurious lifestyles and making high incomes for minimal labor, while talking about equality and same pay for same labor. Ironic.

LOL, rather than addressing the topic, you chose just another ad hominem, trite post to deflect attention away from the criticism of useless Moore. Can't attack the political hypocrisy, so attack the messenger, and in the process creating another vapid IMDB post.

If you're seriously butthurt I didn't call them hypocrites, because they'd lack the basic cognizant ability to understand it, I'd recommend going out of mom's basement and exploring the world.

The problem with addressing the topic is that its ridiculous. Moore isn't a communist or even a real socialist. He's never said anything about not making money just that it should be more equitable for everyone. If you have explored the world you'd know there are plenty of places where people are better off than here and they still have plenty of rich people. Thanks for pulling out the thesaurus though

Yep, and Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence with its line, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." All the while owning a plantation full of slaves.

You can be rich and still think other people should be payed better or more fairly. They're not either/or propositions.

Interesting point. In fact, 1/3 of all the men who signed the Declaration of Independence were slave owners. So tell me, how to guarantee a man the rights to Life, Liberty (which is freedom) and the pursuit of happiness while keeping him captive as a slave?

The problem with socialism/communism is that you eventually run out of other people's money to give away.

The point is that people are complicated. Jefferson owned slaves and knew it was wrong, but that doesn't mean the ideas put down in Declaration weren't terrific. Dalton Trumbo liked being rich (who wouldn't?), but he also understood that his good fortune didn't mean that everyone else had to do poorly.

The United States has arguably never been more successful as a nation than it was in the 1950s --when the rich had a 91% tax bracket. You don't have to think that's a good idea (I don't) to see that something closer to that is better for the nation as a whole.

The confusion arises when the subject at hand is improperly understood.

Everything people know about communism or socialism, is what they've been told by entities who can and get to spread ideas and information in this type of society. Not by communists themselves, but rather by, as inherent to the very conditions communists critize, their enemies.

Nobody in this thread knows what communism is about, so the discussion ends with straw man arguments.

Even the movie gets it wrong. Communism isn't about charity or kindness, but about safe guarding common interests - i.e. solidarity. It's about seizing the means of production and ending exploitation. So instead of forcibly giving away your share of work to some individuals who gets to keep the fruits of your labor, you keep it yourself.

In a capitalist system, people who own other peoples work get rich, not people who work. Socialism ends that. If you work more and better, you get more. Being somewhat well-off as Trumbo in the movie, and a communist is not a contradiction. Having a ranch you earned through a salary is peanuts compared to what it means to own the labour of dozens or thousands of workers.

Seizing the means of production, in the end, also means seizing power from the minority who rule through their wealth. It means democracy and freedom made available for the majority of people, and not just for a few.

You seem to use the word "seize" a few times. Doesn't seizing property without due process of law violate the 5th and 14th Amendments to the Constitution?

That hypocrisy wasn't unaddressed by the film. IIRC Louis CK in their scene by the private(?) lake said something to the effect of your post title.

Also, remember the scene where he gets back to the ranch after selling a screenplay; he jumps out of a Cadillac and hoists a couple of bottles of champagne over his head and shouts "we're rich!".

In any case it shows how generous and willing to share he was. Which is why Hollywood hated him and communist supporters.
