If you do indeed learn the truth about Joe McCarthy you'll see that, unlike Trumbo, he was not a vile man at all but a very honorable one. He was vindicated by the Venona Cables when they were released to the public in 1995. Many of those he investigated were indeed communists and even communist spies.
shareMost of those he investigated were not spies at all but communist in theory or as a philosophy. I don't believe there's any way to white wash his hysterical the sky is falling tactics or the many lives he ruined. He also went after such "unamerican" things as homosexuality.

McCarthy attacked people for being homosexual, while his chief counsel and right hand man was Roy Cohn, a self-hating closeted gay man who later died of AIDS.

I'd rather a man who wanted to support his country and the freedoms it guaranteed rather than a man who supported one of the most destructive and murderous political systems in all of history. And not only did he support it, he and his friends tried to bring it here in the form of unions that fomented violence.

Communism is a theory and an utopia, never communism was really set up in any place in the world.
