Escape!!!

Ok so she's in that room and she doesn't bother to escape. There's a skylight I don't think is locked and she can probably stack some stuff to get there she has chairs and she's tall enough. Or why doesn't she break down the door to get out. She could use that door to break down the door.

Man there are a lot of holes in the hull room scenes in the movie.

Trollin, trollin, trollin.
There. Feel better now that someone is paying attention to you?

reply

um, did you even watch the movie? smh

reply

Yes

reply

well then i suggest you watch it again and pay close attention to what she said about what happened when she tried to escape.

reply

first-skylight was polycarbonate, next to impossible to break. Second- I will keep laughing at those who insist that if she stacked furniture, books, etc that she would be able to escape through the skylight. More than likely if she tried that, she would have fallen and got injured. Then what? Third- even if she COULD break the code on the first door, do you really think that someone in her condition(not healthy, injured wrist would somehow be able to break down a second door? More than likely what would happen if she tried any of your ideas, she would have gotten hurt AND gotten caught trying to escape. This would result in punishment from her captor. He could decide to kill her(leaving Jack in his care),kill Jack, starve them, etc.

I will admit that the book does a far better job explaining how the shed was reinforced so that she could not escape.

WE ARE SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT IF SHE COULD HAVE ESCAPED SOONER, SHE WOULD HAVE!!!!

1. Yes, the skylight IS locked. I think it's just a window that isn't supposed to actually open in the first place. It's impenetrable. In the book, she talked about how she tried to break it with every heavy thing in the room and nothing worked.
2. Door is also impenetrable. And what do you mean use door to break down the door??

Whatever the weather my ass! It's hot as hell out here!

reply

Skylight impenetrable - seriously??? It wouldn't take 7 years to hack through the edge seals.

Thieves get in through skylights all the time.

The director should have just made it a thick concrete room with no windows and it would have eliminated all doubt.

reply

Any digging or breaking that would have taken a few days would mean that Old Nick would notice it.
And what do you think would happen to Ma for an escape attempt? A 'tut tut, finger waggle, don't do that' moment?
Or something brutal? We see how he acts when she defies him. We know he broke her wrist.

Its a simple presumption of the movie. She has done her best to escape, but failed. We don't really need a half hour of exposition about ever possible escape effort do we? Does it ad to the movie, or can just believe her when she somes it up and says she couldn't escape?

I would love a serious discussion on this topic, or even a sort of riddle-styled conversation. Obviously OP has other intentions.

I did wonder if she attempted to use the mattress and some other objects to get up to the skylight early on, but to me the window seemed very well secured and if she did manage to reach it, it'd be at an unfavorable angle at which she'd be able to do little damage/pry it open.

I think her best bet would have just been to attack him again, preferably when he is sleeping, but the trick is the door code. She'd be stuck.

Her plan, while a little convenient (it's a story, after all), was actually not that bad. She could have just stuck to the sick thing, really, and waited a day or two more.
