Not bad!

Considering that the two principal writer/directors have mostly worked on kids shows and viddy games. This is actually a pretty fun little movie!
The characters are likable, or fun to laugh at. The various plot developments don't seem too forced and over all it just works pretty well.
I wont give anything away, but this is worth watching just for the climactic bit at the end. Let's just day it gets a little gory.

The movie is a little weak on character development. It tries, but the chemistry just isn't there.
Also it spends 3/4ths of the flick just kind of romping around and there is no real build up towards the end. Well there is, but it is not terribly effective.

That all said, of the various screenings, and paid viewings of films I've been to in the last 3 months, this was one of the more enjoyable, if not the most.

In the realm of horror comedy how does this stack up against Tucker and Dale VS Evil or Shaun of the Dead?

reply

It's not that kind of funny. It is more like your standard 80's slasher movie, but the banter between the characters is not as canned sounding. But it isn't as much of a slasher
Also a lot of the humor comes from it being set in rural Eastern Europe.

The one weakness of this movie is that it doesn't really become a horror movie until the last 20 minutes. But then that last 20 minutes is pretty epic.
They should have done it more like Dead Alive. More of a gradual wind up to the finale.

Thanks! Still sounds like something that I would like, so have to see where is it playing.

Not EVEN CLOSE. Tucker and Dale vs Evil is one of the best horror/comedies IMHO. This one isn't really funny, its actually boring except for the ending. This one isn't even as cool as Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon.

reply

I personally find "Tucker and Dale vs Evil" overrated. This movie gave me way more laughs, and its characters are clumsy and likeable.

reply

me too. while tucker and dale was better produced. the delivery in that movie was too parody-like and the lines in this movie where overall funnier.

The last twenty minutes were awesome, but it's just unfortunate that you have to sit through an hour and twenty minutes of nothingness to get to it. Would have worked better as a short film. Everything that they set up in the first 3/4ths of the movie could have been summed up in like 2 minutes.

reply

That is exactly where most FF flicks falter or fail, too much useless build up. There has only been a few that were actually gripping from start to finish. Patience is definitely a prerequisite for these type of films

reply

I didn't find the buildup useless. It fed into the ending, which was pretty satisfying. People nowadays really have no patience.

reply

This. I went in blind, and must say was quite surprised when *beep* hit the fan. The fact that it took this long -and I kinda didn't expect it any more- only added to the effect. Maybe the long build-up was actually done on purpose, just for that reason...

Also, a movie doesn't have to be *pow pow gurgle schjlit guaargh more gurgle* all the time. Good things come in small doses...

As for the characters being likable or not. That doesn't make or break a movie either. These movies try to imitate real life more than they try to be actual movies. And real life comes with a lot of unlikable characters and boring moments too... lol

I love horror films that have a long build up.
I'm gonna give this one a shot!

If you like slow paced movies, try The Borderlands.

Pretty entertaining, IMO. Was fun to watch the bad VFX and stuff

Warning - slight spoiler:
I loved it! It was a fun movie. I laughed at the House Hunters intro - Goran was an ass but he was funny. I liked that it was an unexpected ending - as far as who died. Glad it didn't take the traditional approach. The banter between the crew was realistic and kept me entertained. The special effects at the end was a bit on the poor side - but it was still fun to watch the madness ensue. I've loved Kris Lemche since Gingersnaps - so he was good comic relief. I love when he said, " I can't believe she drank that! " After all that he witnessed - that was his takeaway! Good movie. It is what it is. Not an Oscar contender -but lighthearted horror movie fun!

This is a very good summary.

It was quite refreshing to have characters (especially in low budget, found footage) that were funny and entertaining instead of annoying tools and even worse those director/writers who also "star" in their own movies and have zero talent.

It's a light watch but the cast have chemistry together so it keeps your interest. I loved the intro.

Special effects - Oh boy, not good...I'm talking SciFi channel bad movie we're not even trying not good. But in the end, I can forgive the f/x because on some weird level it fits the light horror comedy tone of the movie and everything else was enjoyable.

If I had to describe this movie, I'd say it's almost like a Tales from the Crypt episode that was made into a full length movie.

reply

I liked it too. Not a classic and more fun than scary (which was probably intentional), but the climax was absolutely hysterical! I love these slow-burners that go ballistic in the final sequence.

As much as I'm critical to the "found footage" format I have to admit I'm greatly entertained by some of them as well.
