Comedy Horror

What do people find interesting in comedy/horror? I've never understood how that genre does well.

A little late, but I'll put in my two cents.

I like some comedy/horror movies (like Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland, Return of the Living Dead, Fright Night, Monster Squad, Evil Dead 2, Creep Show, The Lost Boys, etc, etc.) That being said, even traditional slasher movies are enriched by an occasional gag from time to time.

For me, the comedy makes these movies far more entertaining.

Granted, it's used differently in each of those aforementioned films, but comedy creates empathy for the characters (many of whom will be butchered before the credits roll). Our lives are neither totally good, nor totally bad. So the comedy creates a personality for the characters that makes them more than mere bloodsacks on the screen. It makes them human. Like us.

An axe murderer can take our heads, but not our sense of humor.

I don't understand. It is my dream to be successful filmmaker one day but blending horror with comedy is something I will never do.

They are the polar opposite of genres therefore they contradict each other when mashed together.

Being in a playful "laughy" mode means that you're not going to be scared during the parts that are supposed to create tension...

Imagine a very well done and intense scene of a scared woman walking through a haunted house with her friend when suddenly her friend farts...it just ruins everything and I don't understand what they are trying to make the audience feel .

Action and comedy work well...horror? Not so much...

Disagree on most points, although you did make yours in a very clear way and I appreciate that. Horror movies are never actually scary though, because you know they're not real and couldn't actually happen for the most part. Knowing some people feel this way may help horror/comedies made more sense.

They're great *because* they're opposites. The horror becomes more intense because of the comedy, and the comedy becomes more funny because it clashes so hard with the horror. It's like using two very different ingredients in a recipe because they bring out each other's best qualities because they are opposites.

It's honestly my favorite genre

Because Scream isn't an iconic horror movie or anything right?

reply

Scream is no comedy, dumdum. It's clever satire, but still pure horror.
