Romania not Moldova

This was filmed in Romania not Moldova, I'm curious why they said otherwise. Storywise it wouldn't have mattered if they just said where they REALLY were. The opening sequence with the "Home Seeker Show" was worth the price of admission alone H.Y.S.T.E.R.I.C.A.L. "in Moldova it means good luck" ..."I'm a soccer player, what else you need to know?" LOLOL
Also i enjoed the scenery of a real ROMANIAN village (again better to have just said Romania). Even though the premise has been done a 100x before it was still a fun movie, probably been more ORIGINAL at this point if it just used normal perspective as opposed to FOUND FOOTAGE cliché.

Would you say that the film was saying positive things about rural life in the country in which it was set? And do you think the government authorities of the country in which it was set would take kindly to such a depiction? OBVIOUSLY, they would only be allowed to FILM in a particular country if it was SET in another. Sheesh...

It's almost as bad as them claiming lord of the rings was in Middle earth, when it was really filmed in New Zealand!

reply

Probably because the government didn't want the film to paint a bad picture of what Romania is like.
It was probably a stipulation of them being allowed filming locations to not say that it was Romania because this movie doesn't really help Romanian tourism being a movie about tourists literally being witch hunted and stuff.

Moldova and Romania are culturally close, so I guess its like filming in Canada and say it's US. And Moldova probably sounds more exotic to westerners. They have probably heard of Romania but not Moldova
