New characters were awful

Joseph Gordon Levitt - solid actor but I found him to be very annoying in the role. I didn't buy him in the part and didn't like that he kept bailing Axel out of a jam as opposed to Axel getting himself out.

Grant - How do you waste Kevin Bacon like that? We all know what this legendary actor is capable of especially when playing a villainous role. I mean damn Ellis Dewald got more time in part III to chew up some scenery. Kevin was given bare boned material to play generic villain.

Jane - oh lord. Just see Helena in Indy 5, McClane's son in A Good day to Die Hard, and that's about the level of annoyance Jane brings to Axel F.

Movie was descent enough. Just wish the new characters were better written. It was gold seeing Judge, Ashton, and Murphy back together again. But we needed more of the trio on screen together. Also nice having Reiser back as Jeffrey.

I liked the new characters and thought the actors did a fine job.

Okay that's fine. I don't agree.

agreed.

I mostly agree but with some exceptions. I did notice & find it odd how Joseph Gordon Levitt's character saves Axel like 2 or 3 different times in situations where Axel would normally get himself out of trouble. It almost feels like there was an abandoned subplot about Axel & getting old and losing a step that never gets properly addressed.

Grant was definitely somewhat wasted as a villain. They could have given Kevin Bacon more to do with the that role. It was indeed pretty generic.

I didn't have a big problem with Jane though. I found that there was a proper balance to the relationship she had with Axel. I didn't find her "resentful, estranged daughter" dynamic with Alex to be overbearing. They also didn't portray her as some irritating "Girl Boss" who constantly one- ups the male protagonist. Not a great character but perfectly tolerable. A similar sentiment I have for all of the new characters.

"Decent enough"(but still could have been better) is a fair description. It was never going to be anywhere near as good as the first or the second. It's not even as good as the third, which I find to be rather underrated. Nonetheless I still found it to be an enjoyable enough re-visit of a classic movie series that began 40 years ago.

Jane was completely unbelievable. She almost loses her life in the parking garage scene and yet takes no action: Doesn't drop the case, doesn't get a bodyguard, continues walking around as if she has no threats.

In the later restaurant scene, Jane could not possibly have heard Axel's shtick but yet walks up and falsely claims to be the mayor's aide. All of a sudden she supports Axel's schemes? The whole scene was absurd. And no lawyer is going to risk their license by bluntly lying.

I thought that was to show that she has some of her dad's skills, being able to talk herself out of a situation etc.

reply

I thought JGL was fine but it was weird to see him in this. Agreed about the daughter. Just annoying. And it's a real shame about Kevin Bacon. They even spoil it in the trailer.

It seemed like there were too many characters, we barely saw Bacon and Reinhold. And we saw too much of Axel's daughter and the chopper pilot.

The whole thing felt like a cheap fan made project as opposed to the huge production values and excesses of the first film.

Jane is not a good actress and wtf is up with her face ?!
