A mini-series yanked after only 2 episodes so that they can show repeats of a game show. You really have to love what modern television has become. __________________________________________________________________________________ The government has ceased to function, the corporations are the government - Theodore Dreiser
Is there anywhere else we can see this? It seems like something ABC just bought from somewhere else. I suppose we can read the book that it was based on.
IMDb has "Shark Tank" listed in the Genre 'Game Show'. I would say that is a loose classification though. I guess it could be considered a modern game show rather than a typical one such as "The Price Is Right" or "The Joker's Wild".
Whatever it is considered, I am disappointed that ABC isn't burning off the rest of the mini-series and is instead showing reruns of yet another reality TV program. _________________________________________________________________________________ The government has ceased to function, the corporations are the government - Theodore Dreiser
ABC's programming department is run by morons. Starting a miniseries during a holiday week -- when many people are still on vacation -- is asinine. Yanking it because it didn't do well, after they did everything they could to sabotage it, is the next moronic move.
It only serves to prove that you should never watch anything new on ABC. Wait until it's been given a full-season order (or a second season) before you commit. Otherwise, you'll get stuck with a partial season and no guarantee of resolution.
I had the first two and I guess now only two episodes recorded on my DVR that I was preparing to watch. Now, it looks like I can delete the two shows and not worry about future recordings. I'm sure glad I didn't get hooked on a new series. The Primary TV Networks ABC, NBC, and CBS have all done this at various times and it erks the daylights outs of me. Makes me only want to watch the cable and premium channels.
I come here a lot because it's a clean, well lighted place.
Exactly! They start during a ridiculous time and then shock that it didn't get a great start? and then they leave people hanging.... with a MINI-SERIES!
I mean they can't just burn off the last few episodes and show those who did start watching it and they have to dump repeats of reality show? Way to really get people to ever bothering giving any future mini-series or shows a try in the future.
Oh and I love how they lock people out their own websites streaming videos unless you sign in through cable. Funny me I thought ABC stood for American BROADCASTING Company not American CABLE Company.
Well, let's face it, The Assets had some problems from the start. One was the writing -- as I said elsewhere here, there were parts of the first episode that made me laugh out loud or cringe for all the wrong reasons. At times it felt like I was watching a Lifetime movie of the week.
Another problem was that it had a no-name cast. Yes, I know that some of the cast have distinguished careers in the UK and are well known there, and I'm in no way implying that such accomplishments are somehow inferior to having “made it” in the US; that being a recognized name in the US is somehow a “step up”; et cetera. I'm just pointing out a marketing fact – if you want to attract American viewers, it helps to have some performers who are already familiar to the average American dork and dorkette.
Yet another was questionable casting. Whatever can be said of Ms. Whittaker's performance and skills, she's simply too young to convincingly portray the mother of a teenaged daughter. She's too young to convincingly play a character who was already a working adult in flashback scenes set thirteen years before “the present.” Et cetera.
And there was still another problem. Now, I can't think of any way to fix this issue without unacceptably fictionalizing a true story. But then again, I'm not a teleplay writer; maybe there is a way. On the other hand, there are some stories that just don't make good TV, and this might be one of them. But in any case, there's no getting around the fact that no matter what else happened, the worst thing that would happen to the lead character is that she might lose her job if she screwed up. She worked long hours, but without any strain on her marriage. It was never even implied that she might be in any personal danger from her work. Hey, that may have well been true for the real Sandy Grimes, and if so, good for her. But if you wanna get Joe and Jane Sixpack interested in a drama, the hero(ine) has to be in more personal and direct jeopardy than what was shown here.
Lackluster advertising, bad time slot, and so on -- yes. But even if it had been given a strong backing by ABC, it might still have flopped sooner or later IMO.
None of that should encourage anyone to axe a series after just a few episodes. Give it a full season. Do they have dumbos green-lighting then cutting these shows??? It shows more about the TV exec's incompetence than how good the show really is.
As for the writing, I'd like to see some of your examples and will look for them.
Second, as for her age and portraying a mother of a teen, that's not uncommon for network TV; but I didn't think it was egregious. It didn't take me out of the story at all.
Two episodes (of less than 45 minutes each) is barely enough time to establish anything, even if it's 25 percent of the miniseries. They just barely got to the other side of the drama (their own defector).
I watch almost nothing on ABC; but each time I do (Pan Am and Zero Hour) they kill it. And didn't they do the V reboot and FlashForward also? At some point, I won't bother at all, assuming it will be cancelled.
Assets was the only ABC show I have watched since Last Resort was cancelled. No other ABC show has interested me. So what does ABC do? They cancel Assets after airing only two episodes of a limited run mini-series.
They should have let it run its course. Problem, to me, was the miscast lead. I guess tv viewers aren't ready for true tv. "They can't handle the truth".
No, I've never even watched the show. I stopped by the board to see if the episodes I have, were worth watching, or if it was going to get cancelled early, since it is so common these days. I've seen you on the boards of other shows that I watch, so to find you randomly here on an obscure show's board going through all of the same bits, just shows me that you truly are a troll, and not someone who wanted to be a fan, and was just disappointed.
If it looks like a troll, and acts like a troll, its probably a troll.
This is what I can't wrap my fừcking head around. The show was only planned to run on a LIMITED 8 EPISODE BASIS. So what if your Thursday night 9pm timeslot "sucks" for 8 weeks? I'm sure all of your re-runs of "The Bachelor" or whatever the hell they decided to fill the slot with (Shark Tank in this case, which I have no earthly effing clue what the hell it is even about; but I see it has the owner of the Dallas Mavericks in it), but there's NO WAY a RERUN of a REALITY TV SHOW will attract MORE viewers than base that would have been watching "The Assets".
Another thing that twists my tits is they've already got the MINI-SERIES filmed and produced, why on EARTH not air the damn thing?? Even if you don't like how your current timeslot is doing with it; move it to another slot. And run your reality TV with updates of some 'famous' person's menstrual cycle, fights with family and whatever else they put out in those absolutely vapid shows.
Other than that, I'm on board with everyone else's points: relative no-name cast (For the truly thick Americans that is, doesn't bother me whatsoever), lack of promotion, starting during a holiday week, et al.
