Looks like ABC canceled this show AGAIN

ABC Drops "The Assets" (Again) in Favor of "Mistresses" Encores
The limited series returned to Saturday nights at 9:00/8:00c last month.

Not surprised, but disappointed. Guess I'll just get the book from the library.

When I checked the ratings for episode 3, they were about 1/3 the poor ratings of episode 2 that got it cancelled the first time.

So one-third of the already worst ratings in the history of ABC for a new show.

I wondered if they'd see the rest of the episodes out under those circumstances. Guess we know now.

Why in the hell don't they just sell the rights to it to Netflix and be done with it; so we can see the rest of the story (not that we don't already know). When I see "popular on Netflix" on my screen, it's filled with LOADS of things that wouldn't last two episodes on bottom feeder ABC, but that the greater population who don't "do" networks would be glad to see.

But I was enjoying the various actors doing their thing.

A shame.

No need to go to the library, it looks like they rescheduled it again...

LOS ANGELES (thefutoncritic.com) -- ABC has found a new home for the remaining installments of its limited series "The Assets": Sunday afternoons.

Look for episodes five ("Check Mate") and six ("Small Useless Truth") on Sunday, July 27 at 4:00/3:00c and 5:00/4:00c, respectively; and the concluding episodes seven ("The Straw Poll") and eight ("Avenger") on Sunday, August 3, likewise at 4:00/3:00c and 5:00/4:00c.

Said time periods are generally used for encores of the Alphabet's reality offerings.

The news marks the third home for "The Assets" to date after bowing on Thursdays nights at 10:00/9:00c in January and being revived on Saturdays at 9:00/8:00c last month.

reply

OK, cool, at least they are seeing it out then.

reply

That's cool. I JUST what was going to see what was on tonight and saw that was missing. I wish it would've been allowed to play out at 9, but oh well. I set up a Season Pass for it so it'll be found I think. It's just frustrating since it is a MINI-series so would be done in a month or so anyway.

reply

Episodes 5 & 6 showed on KABC-TV Los Angeles at 2 and 3 pm PT today. I had a Season Pass set up for it on my TiVo and it picked it up automatically. And episodes 7 & 8 are in my To Do List at the same times next week.

reply

I set my DVR to record, so I hope it'll find it for me. Damn, I found this show to be very compelling and generally good storytelling.

This is ridiculous. I'm not surprised the ratings were low since no one even knows it is running. I discovered its reappearance by accident, like many others I suspect.

Episodes 3 & 4 were outstanding, especially episode 3. I wish ABC had just put it up for sale on Amazon or sold it to Netflix so that people could enjoy it without waiting months between episodes.

reply

Hey thanks for the update! If my DVR doesn't automatically pick it up like it did on Ep 3 (to my surprise), then closer to July 27, guess it's time to reset it.

What a saga--this show has more twists and turns than the search for the mole by Sandra and Jeanne!!! haha

I really want to see how the writers handle the whole saga of how the Agency kept missing and missing and missing Ames's problems, the drinking, the overspending for years and years.

But we cannot seem to get far enough with this series to see the truly interesting bits on how they missed so much for so long and why. Maybe they just knew and looked the other way in order to see who Ames's contacts were and things like that--you know, leave him in place to see who he connects with on the other side.

But surely after so many assets disappeared and people died, they'd have eventually said enough is enough.

It's only really getting good now! With the new wife who likes to spend money and such.

reply

It ends up being a self fulfilling event. I personally don't get into Serialized storylines because I will more likely be wasting my time. Wasting my time because the network cancels the show with no resultion. Fox, NBC are the worst offenders.

Agggggg OK Now I am done with ABC. Man now they can't even finish like what maybe two episodes left now? Never start watching any of their shows again

EDIT: OK, I guess they are showing the rest, now late July and Aug, so it's OK. At least they are seeing it through so that's cool and can trust them again.

It is a shame they somewhat bungled it. They coulda played it up over the Ukraine thing (although that would be sort of a dicey thing to do) and even many who watched it the first time had no clue it started again, etc. but hey at least they are finishing it off.

It's really become quite compelling, really a shame it doesn't get more traction.

reply

pretty typical the past 5 years or so on most networks. ABC will most likely have something i'll want to see in the future with about 5 shows I can't stand that get better numbers. ABC and NBC are the worst of them all though IMO.

i'm kind of glad this happened. we get 2 episodes in one day, twice.

reply

Yeah, Wikipedia let me know that it was rescheduled again (last night the article wasn't updated; but it was today).

Yeah, stupid on ABC's part to think they could quietly start showing it (without the 1st 2 eps.) and have people watch it in bigger numbers. They should have rebooted the whole thing, with a bit of promotion and showed it 2 at a time over a month. I'll pick it up via DVR with the afternoon showings.

Hard to imagine 'Mistresses' repeats are so great.

reply

Will be giving "Mistresses" a miss.

The UK original was fantastic. Sexy, cheesy and quality all rolled into one, with great Bristol scenery too. And four magnificent actresses who can do anything.

Can't imagine how hideous an ABC version must be. Ouch.

reply

I never watched the British one, even though it got good reviews and Sharon Small was in it (I think) and I like her a lot.

reply

Even though my DVR was set for The Assets, it recorded the Mistresses. I made a point of deleting it before watching a minute of it.

Here's my two cents on this topic:
Nooooo!!! 'The Assets' has been pulled and postponed AGAIN?! Really ABC network? Really?! It's a freakin' miniseries! Why can't they just let it run its course? I mean, sure it's not the best of shows...but it is by no means the worst! The fact it's based on a real story is interesting! The over the top performances and outrageous accents are entertaining! I hope they really DO air the final four episodes at the end of the month! Hmph!
Paul Rhys is the best Welsh character actor in the woooooorrrrld! Stop underrating him, American television and film!
I even contributed to the collection of nasty letters about this on the ABC website. Which makes me wonder why this show keeps failing to gain ratings...I am definitely NOT the only fan! Though it would help if they would stop changing the times and perhaps advertise!
I wonder if Paul pissed off one of the big-Whigs or something? Apparently he was blacklisted from the British stage for a time...But that's only because he kept getting too into his roles and having to cancel projects to follow due to exhaustion. At least the BBC loves him. His wife is a successful American television producer, they ought to go in on a project together! Of course, that may also be why 'Assets' has not been completely canceled. But still! The show is getting good! I hate all of this waiting!

reply

It is American television and the historical facts on The Assets were threatening to be far too accurate and true for us Americans. The Tea Party Version will actually Prove Aldrich Ames worked for the Obama Administration.

aka the Disney network—to drop the show and ABC complied, at least by airing it when no one will see it.

Funny! It never occurred to me that anybody in "the govmint" might object, as this was just an historic story from almost 20 years ago.

But hey. Did you ever see "Rubicon?" That was ditched by AMC after just one amazing season--one of the smartest written and most compelling thriller slow-burn dramas ever done.

A friend of mine said, "oops, guess the powers that be got that one canceled."

It was far more illustrative of what the powers might get up to than poor little "The Assets."

"Rubicon" probably hit a little bit too close to home for some. It definitely raised questions about what and who is behind some incidents that occur in the world. It brought up some rather serious questions about it.

reply

Rubicon was mesmerizing and scintillating! I enjoyed the slow peeling of the onion that show did. Ironically the main character once played a role on 24 as Jack Bauer's Partner.

This is a good show. I'm willing to bet that the US government pressured ABC—aka the Disney network—to drop the show and ABC complied, at least by airing it when no one will see it.

Do give it a try. Sharon Small was wonderful in it. But it also had Shelley Conn, Sarah Parish and Orla Brady, who as actresses form a much higher quality of ensemble of serious talent than US versions offer up with the botox and wooden acting set.

The male support cast was also quite fine, including Patrick Baladi and Raza Jaffrey.

The latter series was a bit off and was not as good IMHO as the first series. But still far better than anything a naff US knock off could offer.

The Assets vs. Mistresses! This reads like a joke, but unfortunately (apparently) is true. It says so much about today's tv viewing audience and ABC, too.
