The only person that could open up a door was Ed

Seriously every time someone was stuck at a locked or blocked door Ed was the only one that could open it. Everyone else was utterly useless at getting through a doorway. The lady with her fumbling key, the guy and his 2 hour chopping session hitting the middle of the door for some reason.

Didn't you notice the doors slamming shut to prevent entry to those that Valak didn't want in the house? It allowed Ed in because it wanted him inside, to lead him upstairs and to eventually fall onto the tree spike in the garden, as it prophesied to Lorraine in her vision of his death.
