Is this a box office success?

It looks like production costs has been covered, but the marketing - not.

At least 50 million.
This movie officialy cost 75 million.
From the domestic distribution studios recieve approximately 50 % of the gross. In this case, it means Sony made on "Inferno" app. 17 million in the U.S.
From the international market studios receive at least approximately 30 % of the gross, which brings Sony at least 60 million.
So, today you have approximately 77 million earned for Sony from the entire, global theatrical run of 'Inferno', which, as I've said, covers its production costs, but doesn't cover marketing and (to be precise) distribution costs.

That is very interesting. Do you know where I could read up on this topic?

It is a box office success, the marketing costs are not included in the films overall profitability. Marketing costs come from a pool of money that funds all the studios films thus the film is not required to bring in the marketing costs to be successful. Also a film such as this makes a lot of money from product placement, which is always in the tens of millions.
So it outright bombed in the US but 218 million on a 75 million budget is pretty decent. We may even see a part 4.
Yep, it is a success as the reigned in the budget significantly. It interesting just how little it did in America though. I imagine they want there marketing money back as well though, however we are only looking at the box office money it has made. There are tv right sales, digital and physical sales, rentals and no doubt paid product placement. The film seems to be a success financially.
This isn't a smash hit per se, but if they feel they can make another film for a similar price I wouldn't be shocked to see it happen. Sony Pictures doesn't have much else behind them.
If the studio was to do another movie, The Lost Symbol I'm guessing, now would be a good time to consider recasting Langdon. Let's face it, Hanks is old and he's no Liam Neeson.
