I really don't understand HBO fans' impossible standards

I will always have HBO. From Oz to The Wire to Boardwalk to GOT to SV to Veep. I love Taxicab Confessions and the Bunny Ranch. Sopranos, Curb, Eastbound, Entourage also great.

Often though it seems like there are so many haters on HBO series. I do understand that this is premium viewing and we all pay extra for it so the standards are higher than standard channels but this show is funny!

Silicone Valley and Veep are top notch comedies but I also think this along with How to Make it in America are/were great shows as well. Put Luck on that list also, while I understand that was cancelled for more than just fan displeasure.

This to me is priceless comedy, those awkward parts of marriage that are there in every relationship one way or another. It may not be intimacy for some but every relationship has something where the partners don't see eye to eye, something that at times seems potentially damaging to a marriage but overall you can look back at it and laugh once you make it through.

Sometimes the shows that get praise on HBO verses the ones that attract haters is completely bizarre to me. I tried so hard to like Leftovers but to be honest that show is a complete confusing, terrible mess. I think it's one that fans are wanting to like, it's supposed to be intriguing but to me at the end of the day it delivers nothing but boring confusion. Just question after question without any answers eventually gets old. You ever read that board? People are all over with what they think is happening in that show and I can't blame them. Girls is awful, True a Detective IS overrated (I said it), Getting On not funny.

I can't put my finger on it overall, it's just odd to me what is disliked on HBO. It's got weird standards. Am I alone on this? If so I'll shut up now :-)

I'm not sure what you're asking. You question why people dislike shows, but then you go and supply a laundry list of shows you dislike. Are you asking why people have opinions? If so, I don't think you're going to find any answers.

I guess I am asking why people have opinions that differ from mine?

No, In seriousness I guess I question these opinions and if there are any motives behind them. I think often times with comedies or anything less than an all out serious drama you have those watching to hate rather than looking to try and enjoy. With dramas, case in point being Leftovers, you have those begging themselves to enjoy it.

I compare it to Batman Dark Knight. Not debating it's rating but how many people KNEW they were going to love it before they saw it? With all the marketing and positive reviews from those who "KNOW" tv/movies (directors or website ratings or professional critics) I think you have people choosing to like Leftovers as opposed to watching it on its merit. Same with True Detective, there is absolutely terrific acting in that show but it is boring. I think there are fans of HBO that are scared to go against the grain.

That's where it confuses me.

As for all channels there are shows on HBO that I like and some that I dislike and stop watching. Togetherness, well I don't like but in the UK it's shown right after Girls that I enjoy so I had a look at it for a few episodes. I don't see your point either. Because it's HBO you're supposed to love all their shows, it's absurd.

I see your point. You love HBO (as you say you'll always have it). But you (I 'm assuming) have read /heard a lot of criticism of this particular show, "Togetherness". Probably here on IMDb, and you don't understand some of the things people are picking apart about (it's 'slow', or about ' boring white people/hipsters or hipster wannabee"; on and on if you read some of the comments on just 4 episodes). I don't understand (or I understand it, but I just ~feel~ differently since I really like the show. ( I have some issues with it; really hope Zissis (sp?) character has less disappointments & doesn't get turned into a 'loser' character pining away for women who pick successful/unavailable/handsome jerks.

There are shows on hbo I don't like, but I will always be grateful to them for providing Boardwalk Empire, the best show ever.
I am enjoying Togetherness quite a bit. Some of the marriage and relationship and marriage stuff is so on point.
