I wonder if they re-shot the ending after they knew they were cancelled

After watching the series finale, it seemed to me that it ended with lots of closure and hope for the characters. But I wonder if this was how Season 2 was originally supposed to end. I wonder if once they were told the series had ended, they re-shot the final scenes to give it closure. It wouldn't be hard for them to do, although Amanda Peet was going to have to get into that costume again for it!

Maybe this was how Season 2 was ending anyway, but again, it just seemed to have the closure of a final series episode, and how would they have known that when that episode was shot?

I have to think they knew this was a distinct possibility before they even started shooting Season 2. Season 1 got dreadful ratings, and shows like this don't exactly build audiences.

I thought the episode was fine. I'm still a little baffled about what kind of school they're trying to build. Is make believe really better than public school?

I was confused about the school a little at first, too, but I get it. The idea is to teach practical application of lessons in a creative environment.

By allowing the children to create their own micro-civilization, they can learn about what goes into maintaining a functioning society. It could be a vehicle for lessons in science and engineering (as was shown), social studies, and could also create context for history lessons, all while actually engaging the children's minds and creativity.

The logistics and curriculum would need refinement, of course, but I think the principle has a lot of potential.

I had a really difficult time getting invested in that charter school plotline. I think they could have done better with Michelle's story.

No doubt they knew cancellation was a possibility. The ending provided some closure, but also left them with plenty of places to go.

In the After-Episode Interview with the Duplass brothers, they only referred to the episode as being the end of second season.

I got the impression that they did want to have some semi-closure at the end. It was like that other wonderful show that had only two seasons Men of a Certain Age. Each season had an ending that could have been a series finale.

Those interviews are likely done during production. Of course they would have hoped to continue after season 2, so they wouldn't outright say that they were planning for it to be an end to the series. They would only have made a point to write it to not be a total cliffhanger, like the end of season 1.

I asked the Duplass brothers this question on Twitter. Jay told me no, they didn't film the finale with the idea it would be the last.

Just so you all know, on Twitter I asked both Mark and Jay Duplass if they shot the season 2 ending with the idea that it could be the last season. Jay responded to me saying No, but that they were proud of how it ended.
