Lousy action film. Badass Costner
I was surprised Kevin Costner could act this convincingly despite the terrible plot and script of this action/crime movie. The film is all over the place with as many cliches as action films can get nowadays: foreign actors playing criminals who speak English with an accent, American actors faking foreigners who speak English with an accent, car chases, carjacks, guns (all sorts of them), antiheroes, the researcher doctor, the hacker, CIA etc. In spite of all these, I was impressed and almost scared by Costner's transformation role-wise and the way he portrayed his character with the requisite ultra-violence. I don't recall Costner smashing human skulls with home objects so coldbloodedly in other films.
Costner seems to have shifted towards two patterns - he generally either plays sportsmen (McFarland, USA (2015), Draft Day (2014), The Guardian (2006)) etc.) or bloodied characters (Criminal (2016), 3 Days to Kill (2014), Mr. Brooks (2007)), with some other genres in between. He used to be and still is a good actor (he hasn't earned two Oscars for nothing), but in recent years, instead of taking more interesting and mature roles to remember, his acting choices seem a bit willy-nilly: a bit of Batman, a bit of documentaries, bit of action thrillers, with most of his recent films receiving negative reception from critics, and for good reasons.
What do you think?
