Did this movie make money?
such a cast! and I doubt any of these folks were taking back-end deals, either. and it's not like the production values were poor. According to Boxofficemojo, it made less than $20M in the US, but they don't have stats for around the world. I didn't notice any grandiose product placement, either.
Also, i know movies like this often make back a large portion of their budget in their overseas distribution rights prior to release.
I've heard conflicting reports from "industry insiders" - one says it's almost impossible for movies (esp Genre films) to lose money (unless they're Oscar Bait, where you gotta spend money on Art). Another says "most movies lose money" but tentpole films float all boats.
Movies like this, or Heist, or the Art of the Steal - with even only one or two big stars - i mean, they wouldn't keep making them unless they made money for the studio, right? I realize Criminal wasn't "direct-to-video" like the other two examples, but you get my meaning. I am always intrigued by the finances of movies like Criminal - lots of names, good production values, outdoor/location shooting. I mean, genre movies set at one location (like Reservoir Dogs) are notoriously cheap. But this one had to hurt, right?
