I know it's none of my business but how much
does a Maine house by the bay, like the Kitteridge house, cost today? I would guess about $600,000. (Bill Murray's house looks even more expensive.)

shareSpeaking of houses, have you ever noticed how often they use Craftsman Style houses in TV shows and films?

I'm a little bit of a house nerd, and yes, I have noticed that. I think they lend themselves well as film sets because they tend to have large rooms and attractive woodwork that isn't flashy so as to distract from the main action.
They also seem to have a quintessential association with the "all American family."
I never even knew what they were until the show Numbers, which featured a beautiful one where all the guys lived, and my wife filled me in on them. Since then whenever we see them we say "Craftsmen" as a kind of shorthand and it happens all the time. Just tonight on Portlandia every house they used was one.

my roughest best guess estimate would be seven figure, somewhere around one million dollars.

Now or then?

Definitely not then. Even now Maine beach front property is nothing like what it would be anywhere else in the country (too cold). Although it would definitely sell well now. But back then it was practically a backwater.

FYI, all the filming locations were Massachusetts.
