Just watched episode 4 Hour of the Wolf. A wonderful episode. Nice to see some background on Ian Murray's story.

Yes, pretty interesting to find out about all that.

I wonder if Claire got her hair cut in the books or if they just did it in the series because the actress was tired of dealing with the longer hair?

They cut her hair in the books. Actually, I thought it was closer to a shave in the books, but it worked.
