The books aren't much better. See, the first two books were exciting, and I got stuck on the third book, which is supposed to be a fun, seafaring adventure. But to be honest, the books that come after aren't very interesting.
I mean, in the first book, we have a 1940s British Nurse who goes back in time 200 years, falls in love with a super-hot Scottish warrior, and gets tangled up in the 18th century conflict between the Scots and the English.
Second book, the story continues, though much of it is told through flashback. First half of the book is where Claire and Jamie go to Paris, and have another adventure, getting tangled up in the politics of the era, as well as attempting to stop the oncoming Scots-English war (which fails miserably). Second half of the book covers how they dealt with the war, after failing to stop it, and how Jamie saves Claire by having her go back to the present while he stays behind. Woven into all of that, you hear what happened to Claire when she came back to the present, was forced to get back together with Frank (despite not really loving him anymore) and spending the next 20 years raising hers and Jamie's daughter, Brianna. But you also hear about what happened to Jamie in the past during those 20 years too, how he had to go into hiding for 7 years, then went to prison to protect his family, then got out and went under an assumed name, was blackmailed into impregnating a spoiled, rich girl, and eventually went to start up a printing press job in Scotland's capital, as well as running a whiskey-smuggling business under the table.
Personally, I hated the 20-year gap. I mean, you see Claire and Jamie separated by time, forced to spend all their youthful years apart, and with new kids taking up the scene as time goes by. From what I heard, even when Claire came back and had that fun sea voyage with Jamie, things got very boring once they reached North Carolina and settled. My mom read all the books and says that they got tangled up in the Revolutionary War later, but frankly, it got really cliche after a while.
