Joni...(spoilers)

I guess it's hard to root for any character in the show, they're all not just black and white but come with every shades of dark. They make mistakes, they make good things, they're dealing with themselves and with diffrent problems. But watching Quarry I just can't shake off one thing and it's Joni...

She cheats on Mac while he's gone on two tours in Vietnam, she's cheating when he's back - in their house(!), with a guy from work and which i guess everybody at the work knows what are they doing (in 2nd episode joni and woman from her work have conversation in car about that), she gave Cliff Mac's favourite Otis record album (and they fought about missing albums!), and on top of that she record sound tape with sex with Cliff, which he saves for himself for, i quote: "What you sound like when you come anytime I want". Just gross...

I mean what the *beep* :D Come on, poor Mac. Is she doing it intentionally?

She destroys tape to get rid of evidence, but she cries because(?):
a) she realize what she did and was ashamed about what she did to Mac
b) she had real feelings for Cliff and cry about him being dead
c) or both a & b?

While reading some reviews about novels, I found something about Joni, that she had 2 others husbands/friends before mac and they were soldiers too, and when they didnt come back, she collected money from einsurance. I guess she IS really bad person.

PS. Sorry for my english:P

The character Joni, is definitely a piece of work, isn't she?
Can't understand why Mac isn't filing for divorce already.
Also, TXs for the information you shared about the fact that Joni did the same to two other husbands/boyfriends. She is not to be trusted at all.
I really hope that Mac leaves her soon.

Cheating on your active duty military husband while he's fighting overseas is deplorable. Killing the guy she's sleeping with is worse.

Also why does getting an insurance payout she was presumably entitled to (insurance company isn't giving money out unless they're the listed beneficiary) make her a bad person? I'm not saying she isn't, just I don't think that particular example is evidence of it.

While I don't mean to defend Joni - I can see why she had her fling with the guy from work.

Quarry already spent 1 yr in Nam - in her mind why on earth would he go back for another?

From what we know - the tapes that she played thus far from Quarry were from his 1st tour in '69...Me thinks the 2nd tour saw limited correspondence between the 2 thus only increasing the loneliness for Joni...Her co-worker saw her as a easy piece of pie.

She is a piece of work alright. What upset me even more though, is when she gets kidnapped because now we know Mac is going to forgive her everything she did to him. I suppose this is the writer's way of getting them back together which I didn't want to happen.

While I agree her behavior was despicable, his was worse. I love them both.

I couldn't believe that on top of cheating on him while he was gone that she was letting the guy make cassettes of them having sex. And did it again after Mac was back with him coming home at any moment.

That seemed a bit much by the writers.

You did just fine, Clarence. Now go get yo'self some hot cornbread!

That's one I can see why some might not like Joni, the fact she still sleeps with Cliff after her fight with Mac. It's a low blow.

They do sort of redeem her by showing she's willing to stand by Mac even through all the shit she finds out about him.

I love the use of Otis Redding Blue record in episode 1. He first finds out Joni is cheating on him and then goes to kill the lover, and he hears the record being played, nice touch.

I think she feels immense guilt for what she did to Mac. I don't doubt she loves her husband and feels betrayed by him when he goes back for a 2nd tour of Vietnam. But the fact she cheats on him once he's back does leave you feeling a little less sympathetic towards Joni. I hate how her friend is all like have one more night with Cliff behind Mac's back. I don't think she loves Cliff over Mac but she does have feelings for him that's for sure but not enough to shop Mac in to the police for him.

I didn't think Joni would play a big massive part in the show. I thought we just see how Mac's life fall apart on him, to add final nail in the coffin he finds his beloved wife has cheated and fallen in love with someone else. And that Joni would play a smaller role in this, being a bit of bitch towards Mac to make us feel more for Mac.

I think Joni just felt lonely and betrayed, doesn't excuse her cheating on him. But I like that she's not some goody two shoes character, that's she's just as messed up as other characters in this.
