Another theory *contains spoilers*

Upon reading someone's suggestion that Loren could have been drugged:

Possibility: a cult girl is hiding at the station on account of the anniversary of Paymon's suicide. Perhaps the reason sergeant is acting strange in the beginning is because he hears the noises (the cult girl) and gets spooked. The girl manages to drug the food or drink that Loren eventually consumes. Loren falls asleep in her chair. Nightmares ensue. The cult girl, in the meantime, comes to steal Loren's gun, at which point she drags Loren on the floor (or Loren falls in her sleep).

When Loren wakes up and is attacked by the cult girl, remember how she says the whole scene might be a hallucination? So, she does have a passing thought that all prior events were a dream. But she is still under the drugs, so she continues to hallucinate and attacks the hazmat crew. And is still hallucinating when she sees Paymon coming after her to put the bag on her head.

In which case there is nothing supernatural in the story, and it's not even about Loren randomly going into psychosis on the anniversary of her father's death, but rather a plain matter of a failed revenge attempt by the cult girl. It's not even odd then that Loren has hallucinations about Paymon because the place reminds her about her father's death.

Possible?

this scenario could only be possible if you were referring to one of the "cult girls" that was not arrested. the one shown in the scene where Loren loses her gun actually hung herself a year prior to the events in the Last Shift. interesting theory though.

I think you are thinking about a different girl. The one I am thinking about is the surviving cult girl who sneaked in the police station. She tells Loren that the other two cult girls "stole" the honor of dying together with the cult leader and she is there today to celebrate the anniversary, and her gift to the cult leader is... and then she blows her brains out with a gun.

Why? Just why? Why does their need to be a theory about everything we don't see that changes this really good film into something else entirely?

I really liked this movie, went to read the forum to see what others thought, read a few interesting explanations of the lose ends that I hadn't thought about myself, and it fueled my imagination. That's all.
