Another reason why too much of anything is not a good thing

Why was Salem canceled? The same reason a lot of other good shows have been canceled. In an age where most people are thrilled with the amount of content there is to choose from on TV and streaming providers, this is the very thing that dooms shows like Salem before they really catch on to a wider audience. Gone are the days where you have shows like Gunsmoke which ran for 20 years, or even a Seinfeld which ended in its 9th season. It's not good writing and production that keeps a show on the air anymore,it's what the Millennials are tweeting about. If there's no hype there's no money to be made by ads and unfortunately the nail is in the coffin before you can even produce episodes that provide some type of closure. Very sad.

I think it was just unfortunate enough to be picked up by a station most people have never even heard of. If they were on FX they would not be canceled. It's a way better show than American Horror Story, that has lost its fire a few seasons ago, but is still on air.

Hah, I thought who thought Salem was better than AHS, especially now. I definitely agree had it been on FX, it wouldn't have been cancelled and probably would've given Ryan Murphy a run for his money...honestly, that show is awful now. Roanoake "nightmare" was a messy, rushed joke.

Good writing and production have never kept a show on the air if people weren't watching it. In every era of television, there have been well made shows that just didn't catch on to a wide enough audience. When you think back to the "good old days", your mind is automatically going to drift to all the shows you remember. And of course, you remember the ones that were popular. There are no doubt some good shows that were canceled back then, but nobody remembers them.

I think a lot of it has to do with the show being on WGN. A more popular and available tv station would be better for this show but it is a WGN show so that is where it airs.

I agree on the hype and tweeting. That's the reason why some shows, especially some fake-reality shows, get monstrous length of seasons and still airing because it's easier to talk about what's going on and so on.

Some tv stations have many popular programs that can help introduce the new shows to potential audience by setting the time slots of new ones after the popular ones. I don't think WGN using the same strategy considering the other shows seem catering a very specific audience. That being said, I think it's a mistake Salem got cancelled.

I agree that the problem is with the channel it's on. I found Salem on Netflix right before the second season started. After binging the whole first season I went to see how much it would cost for me to upgrade and get WGN and found out I'd had it for two years. Same thing when I tell other people about it, they ask what channel it's on then look at me like I'm crazy when I say WGN.

I don't disagree that being on an obscure network had a lot to do with it not getting the audience it deserved, but this could've been helped if they promoted it more. I had never heard of WGN either when Salem first aired. I happened to see a commercial for it on a major network here in NY. Independent networks like WGN advertise their shows on other channels all the time. If they had invested more into backing of this show it probably would've been a hit.
