Anne hale

Favorite character and don't even know why, maybe it's cause I don't quite see her as evil or a bad witch, it was all pretty much just thrust upon her and she doesn't seem to have evil intent yes she's done some bad and killed but each situation had extenuating circumstances, her killing her parents was an accident from having access to power she didn't know how to control and her anger and rage just took over. But like how she's becoming more powerful

They messed up her character. She acts like a straight up psycho forcing Cotton to be with her. Her feelings for him are way too obsessive. Hate that the writers took her down this path as she was my favorite character.

Gonna have to rewatch the end of season two, but guess you could argue she's doing it for his own good lol, ok yea sure a pretty twisted way of taking care of him, but still she's doing what she's doing to keep him alive and she's going to great lengths to do it lol

reply

she doesn't really have a choice. if she lets cotton go and be free the devil and his men were gonna outright slaughter him. she had to be obsessive and constantly keep control of him.

reply

She loves cotton and she has to keep him close because he knows too much about her to live.

reply

Agreed! I liked her at first. But I hate her now because of the way she is.

reply

It won't happen because this show is done for after next week, but after seeing tonight's episode, I think Merchant deserves an Emmy for her performance.

reply

I liked her at first, she was one of my favorite characters because she seemed to be one of the few logical and rational people in the entire town, but they've destroyed her character to where she is now an obsessive psycho. I didn't understand why she was so pissed off at Cotton, calling him a hypocrite, when their marriage is pretty much based on a lie itself since she used her powers to make him marry her. Granted she did it so that she wouldn't have to marry that other guy who is now with Mercy, I forget his name, but still. Cotton told her he just needed more time and he would've married her anyway and then turn around to do what she did to Gloriana then continue to lie to Cotton, something she berated him for. She knew those two had a history and Cotton genuinely was in love with Gloriana.

When Anne discovered she was a witch, I was so convinced that she would be the "good" witch in a town filled with bad ones but I guess the writers weren't having any of that in keeping with the stereotype that all witches are.were bad? I could be wrong and Anne could maybe save the day in the last episode, but I doubt that because, of course, Mary has to be the hero of the story.

IMO, that was the greatest failing of the show. I was really hoping at some point we would see Wiccan-type 'mother earth' witches show up to serve as opposition to the devil-worshipping witches. But apparently they didn't want to add any complexity and just stuck with the black-and-white 'witches are evil' stereotype. The only thing they have changed from the original legends is to demonstrate that the Puritans were pretty darn evil too. The only decent human being in the main cast is Issac the Fornicator.

reply

Exactly! That was such a wasted opportunity in making things more interesting and providing more depth to the story and characters in having those contrasts. It is very disappointing that they didn't go there and, although I love the show, I agree that this was a major failure and misses opportunity. I hate that they stuck with that all witches are devil worshippers stereotype.

I thought Anne would be conflicted between good and evil but would eventually be good. I was surprised they made her evil.

reply

Anne was born a witch, and she cannot change her nature. I never saw her as good, just holding back her instincts.
