All snow white movies pale in comparison to the Disney original. The Daily Wire is pulling the same move they made with Hershey. The idea is funny but the product is overpriced and uninteresting. I agree with much of Michael Knowles and Andrew Klavan, but that doesn't blind me from the quality of their products/productions.

In normal times a low-budget movie starring a no-name actress, put out by an extremist news organization would have no chance at the box office, but nowadays it's impossible to say. I can't imagine any circumstance where this film is any good, but now that people treat political parties like sports teams, that may be immaterial. People go see the Chicago Bears year after year, despite knowing they're going to lose most of the time. I get that this is "your team" putting out the film, so you'll back it no matter what the quality is, but as a moderate independent, I see this as yet another sign that the nation is broken beyond repair.

I don't care if a film espouses my politics or ridicules them. If it's a good film I enjoy it, if it's lousy I don't enjoy it. I firmly believe this is how 90% of the population feels. If the Snow White movie is good, people will see it and enjoy it. Nearly no one cares that 25% the ancestry of the actress playing Snow White can be traced to Colombia, which seems to be a deal-breaker for you.

And while there are still some independent films, there is a lack of larger-budget films for grownups made by established, great directors, starring established, great actors.

There's also far less opportunity to see films in a cinema. Some aren't even released that way, and those that are, are often released for a week or two in a handful of theaters just to meet the minimum requirements to be nominated for an Oscar.

In my opinion, film is in a very bad place right now.

That list underscores my point. Hollywood no longer makes mid-budget films for adults, directed by A-list directors, starring A-list actors.

In the list you shared the top 25 include

5 Superhero/Action/Kiddie movies
2 Concert Films
13 Foreign Films
2 Big Budget Big Director passion projects
2 Indie films

and The Holdovers, the only film in the list that fits the bill of the sort of film that there used to be dozens of every year: a non-surreal, non-artsy, non-foreign, entertaining film aimed at grownups made by a recognizable director and starring recognizable stars.

I'm fine with international films, but I'm talking about an entirely different kind of movie. If you look at the biggest grossest films in past years, you will see that many films were not blockbuster-type movies. I randomly looked at 1990. The top 10 box office movies that year included Ghost, Pretty Woman, The Hunt for Red October, and Driving Miss Daisy. Movies like that simply aren't being made anymore, or if they are it's one or two per year. In the past there were at least a couple dozen such films, probably even more, made each year.

Hollywood has stopped bankrolling those kinds of movies, and it has backfired. Audiences are only going to see the biggest of the big blockbusters-- Barbie, Mario Bros., Oppenheimer, and eschewing even the minor blockbusters that used to make billions.

But in general, yes, most of the superhero and fairy tale films are big budget blockbusters meant to pack theaters and bring in big bucks.

I think this is widely untrue for the majority of them. It's genuinely primarily for teenagers.

I find it hard to believe anyone falls for the "She's fair because she's kind or just" myth. If you read the original Brother's Grimm fairy tale, one of the first lines they used to describe her is to say that she had "skin white as snow." In fact, it was part of her mother's wish when she wanted a child.

In the Disney cartoon, the mirror actually uses the phrase "skin white as snow" to describe Snow White when he tells the wicked Queen who is prettier than her. I know a lot of people forget that, which is why I go out of my way to remind them.

It should also be noted that the word "fair" (sometimes spelled "faire") is an ancient term for "attractive" or "beautiful." It's one reason they called fairy creatures, particularly the High Fae, the "Faire Folk."
