Agree or disagree with the netflix rating?

According to Netflix, this movie is for "8-10 year olds" and "11-12 year olds" and no one younger.

Honestly, I know it really depends on the child, but I don't see why most 5 year olds couldn't see this movie either. Seems they should also put the movie in the "for 5-7 year olds" category.

I mean, I was a very sensitive child growing up and even I would've sat through this movie just fine had I seen it when I was, oh, 5!

reply

Because there are a lot of scary and intense moments that might affect younger kids.

reply

True but Tarzan showed a man hanging himself and, according to Netflix, that movie is for "5 to 7 year olds" and no one older (or younger). I think that's even more intense and scary than anything that was shown in Zootopia so, by that logic, that should also be for 8 year olds and up, because I think seeing a man hang himself might affect some younger viewers as well.

reply

Zootopia actually has jump scares in it and has scenes that are shot like a horror movie, something Tarzan doesnt have, which is probably the rational behind it.

reply

I genuinely didn't even notice Clayton being hung when I was younger. I guess I just assumed he died from the fall.

Whereas Zootopia deals with pretty adult themes that might be a bit much for some children. Obv depends on the child as they're all different.

reply

Just like the Dark Crystal and I came out fine. Why do people think scaring kids is so bad.

All the old fairytales were about scaring kids and teaching them lessons. We have gotten to soft.

reply

Sounds about right, and I'm not even considering the scary imagery. There's so many adult elements/themes/topics that it just seems more suitable for older crowds than preteens. Preteens may enjoy it too but I feel they may find it a little too slow, smart and generally too "adult" for their tastes.
As for the scary situations, I grew up in the 80's and I saw plenty of intense situations on network TV before I was seven years old. In this day and age I seriously doubt kids will have much problem with what little 'Zootopia' has when compared to all they have available to watch on TV, home video, streaming services and all the garbage you can find on the internet with just a single browser search.

If a 5 year old can't watch this, how could they possibly endure the pale, dying E.T. in E.T. or all of the arms/hands getting chopped off in the original Star Wars trilogy? Also, what about the deaths of Mufusa, Maleficent and Bambi's mom? No one even dies in Zootopia.

The themes of Zootopia might go over a five years old's head, but there isn't anything too graphically disturbing for them.

reply

^Agreed with this.

Plus, even if the themes do go over their head, they'd probably still be entertained by the bright colors, cute animals, and "be anything you want no matter who you are" message.

reply

My 5 year old loves this movie. So does my 3 year old. It's fine for little ones.

reply

There are a few themes in Zootopia that might go right over young kids' heads...

...my 6 year old niece got bored half-way through unfortunately, as I liked it and thought maybe she would, too.

I think it's one of those situations where older people can relate to it better than children. They'll love the talking animals, though!

reply

That might explain why, despite making a billion dollars, I never see anyone wearing or having any Zootopia merchandise despite the fact that I intern at an elementary-middle school hybrid.

reply

Well, it's probably because unlike other movies (like Frozen), Zoo barely has any merchandise for it, other than what I could see at the Disney Store, and even that doesn't compare much to the billions of Frozen merchandise I've seen.

reply

Probably true. Weirdly enough, this movie, which is the 2nd highest grossing movie at the worldwide box office, has no merchandise but literally every other popular animated kids movie this year does. I've even seen a kid with an Angry Birds Movie backpack!

Back on topic, though, what do you think about the Netflix rating?

reply

2nd highest??? It's not even close.

reply

Actually, no, it's the 2nd highest grossing worldwide movie of this year, under Captain America. Look at Box Office Mojo: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/

reply

I'll agree with that. I don't think Disney was banking on it being as successful as it was. 'Zootopia' merchandise is rather scare where I live while 'Finding Dory' stuff is still common. I'm also not seeing any official 'Zootopia' Halloween costumes or costume pieces, while outfits for 'Frozen' are very easy to find.

Actually, this kid was wearing a Nick Wilde costume in this Party City ad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLtcYLhjF8I

So, when it comes to Halloween costumes, they've made something!

reply

Nice to see Disney actually has something. Everything I see around here that is licensed by Disney is either princess or superhero related. We also don't have a Party City. Aside from the regular big retail stores like Wal-Mart and Toys R Us all we have are Spirit Halloween and Halloween Express and neither of them have anything with the Zootopia name.
Maybe more stuff will pop up in the coming weeks.

Putting aside the idea that some real young kids can scare easy I think Netflix gave a good age range of children that could understand the subject etc. I was real young when I watched the Great Mouse Detective and it went over my head. I understood it when I watched it years later. However I watched the Secret of Nihm when I was 9 or 10 and understood everything that went on and it did not scare me. In all honesty back in my childhood not many cartoons were mentally for young children that were for example five year olds.

reply

Any kid not afraid of his own shadow can see this.

reply

I agree with what you say. I should explain that when I was 6 years old The Great Mouse Detective did not scare me. It bored me and to be honest now I do not understand why it did.

reply

So my six year old niece saw the movie and both she and her 8 year old sister really liked the part when Judy went "Blood! Blood! Blood! And death." Which...may say more about my nieces than this movie, buuuut I think it's a fine movie for younger kids.

reply

The Dark Crystal scared the *beep* out of me as a kid. It is the PC times that dictate kids cannot handle being scared because they might get scarred for life despite every major mythology being an outright horror show that was narrated to kids throughout history.

Kids do not get enough credit. And I think parents just do not want to have to deal with scared kids coming into the bed at night.
