Is it me or is Disney taking too much time cashing in on this movie?

Okay, so it wasn't a Frozen-like phenomenon with the audience but it made a billion dollars so we all know their going to at least make a TV series or something out of it so why are they taking so long to announce a spin-off?

I mean, come on, Universal and Sony announced they were making sequels to The Secret Life of Pets and The Angry Birds Movie only a few weeks after they were released and neither made a billion dollars so why has Disney refused to make any plans for this movie when it's been almost a year since it came out?

Patience young padawan. Disney is still struggling to understand how Zootopia became a hit in the first place. They never expected it to become as popular as it did, which is why merchandising for the movie was lacking. Disney is looking over things very carefully so they know both who to market the sequel to as well as the best way to do it. They also have numerous projects going at the same time so as soon as they see an opening they'll devote the resources, come up with a plan for expansion/continuation of the property and announce what they've decided when they're ready.
I also wouldn't get your hopes up too high. The late 90's and early 2000's were ripe with straight to home video sequels that were rarely worthy follow-ups to the originals. Although I seriously doubt Disney would return to their old cash-grab ways quite so soon, they can always surprise us when the wrong people are making decisions. I've been let-down by sequels and prequels before so I don't get hyped-up for new productions anymore. I prefer to be pleasantly surprised instead.

^Honestly, sorry if it sounded angry, I'm just surprised they haven't announced anything yet. I know Frozen's merchandise took a while to get going but, by this time, they already announced the sequel, short, Christmas special, etc. so it's a little weird they haven't announced anything for this movie yet.

Been saying this since March!

I haven't really seen much merchandise for Zootopia now that I think about it.

I can kinda understand that making toys and stuff takes a long time but I'm just surprised they haven't greenlit a TV show or a ride or a sequel off of it yet. I mean, when Frozen was 10 months old, they had already announced a lot of plans for it (while they haven't come out yet, I do remember they already announced they were considering a broadway show and sequel by that time) so I'm surprised Disney's been so quiet about this movie.

Then again, they haven't really capitalized on most of their non-Frozen work but this one is especially surprising considering the amount of money it made at the box office. My only guess is the merchandise sales were low so they figure the public wouldn't be too interested in seeing another sequel or anything right away based on that.

That does make sense. The only Zootopia merchandise that I own are the Blu-Ray, soundtrack, and the Funko Pop toys of Nick and Judy.

It also explains why, for example, it took Cars only 5 years to get a sequel and 2 spin-offs while it took Finding Nemo 13 years to get a sequel and Monsters Inc. 12 years to get a sequel. While Cars might've grossed less at the box office than Nemo and Monsters Inc. did, the merchandise sold better and, as a result, despite Nemo and Monsters getting a better reception from critics and adults, and bigger box office results, Disney was more quick to capitalize on it based on the merchandise sales.
