Oscar Chances

So now we know it's up for Animated Feature at the Oscars, what do you think are its chances of winning? It has solid competition from Kubo and the Two Strings and fellow WDAS film Moana. Think the win is likely for this one though?

reply

Well I can give you the betting odds as of today if that helps!

Zootopia: 3/2
Kubo: 9/2
Moana: 9/2

Safe money is still on Zootopia.

reply

Updating the odds since they've changed a lot from yesterday.

These are all by Gold Derby.

Zootopia: 1/10
Kubo: 33/1
Moana: 50/1

Zootopia - will win
Kubo - could win
Moana - wild card
Any of these - should win

Zootopia's chances are quite good.

AMPAS usually goes for the "Lion King" of the year, ie. the biggest money maker that was also critically successful (before anyone pipes in, I know back in 1995 there was no Best Animated Feature Oscar). The voters sometimes don't bother seeing the foreign or indie choices at all, and they've been criticized for flippantly dismissing animation as a format for years now.

I think Zootopia is the film they most likely have seen with their kids or grandkids, and it's a quality film (ie. not some Minions gag-reel or scatologic Shrek sequel), so that's what they'll go for. La La Land will fill their traditional Musical cravings this year.

It's the favorite, but I don't think by very much. I wouldn't be surprised if any of the films nominated this year won it.

Let's hop that whoever wins, we will all treat the academy awards with the contempt they deserve.

Which is all the contempt, FWIW

Excellent comment ??

Yes, yes it was. Just yesterday I saw an article on how the academy screwed over better movies and showed their true colors by giving away the awards to undeserving people and pictures. If anything other than Zootopia or Kubo get the best animated picture award then it's proof that nothing has changed and I won't be surprised.

None of my favourite movies have won the Oscars, so I doubt this one will. Doesn't mean it won't though. There's always a first time for everything.

reply

Well, it won the Golden Globe, so its chances are very high. We'll see if it can win the Annie and the BAFTA, the British Academy Awards.

Dormammu, I've come to bargain.

We've got a few more awards to go that Zootopia has best chance or is the favorite to win. They are ACE, Annie's, PGA and BAFTA's. Of these the PGA and BAFTA's are most important as they are both voting members on the Academy also. Zootopia has already won both of the major awards - Critics Choice and Gloden Globe. If it sweeps the rest it's pretty clear how things or going to go.

reply

It will win, the award is practically Best Disney or Pixar Feature at this point.
