I'm laughing, because I refuse to start my own thread and take on the trolls who will tell me I didn't understand it. I lived in the city in those years and it wasn't all crime and fear (or tinted yellow), because the people being killed were teen gang members and people with mob ties, which made the movie comical to me. Here's a business that this man couldn't for a second be part of without mob ties and the whole "able morals" metaphor was just silly. We're told constantly that he was given the business and the idea that his wife was running the show without his knowledge is the dumbest premise ever.
Then the acting. Oscar Isaacs is brutal and the chemistry between he and Chastain is off putting. She apparently pushed for him to be in it, after Bardem backed out. Can you imagine him running it? Completely different. I commented on twitter during the movie that Isaacs is the only actor I've ever seen who doesn't look comfortable walking, running or having the opportunity to kiss a beautiful woman. He's so awkward it's impossible to get away from. The deer scene clinched it for me.
It is funny, because in all the time they're trying to keep from "losing everything," you never feel it, because they are driving fancy cars, living in a huge secluded home and she's wearing clothing that only the top 1% of the top 1% could afford. Armani in the 80's? Prince and princesses wore that.
Sorry for rambling, but it seemed like a safe place! I just wish I'd turned it off, but I sat through it all. My attempts to grab the remote took longer than Chastain grabbing a loaded gun from her child's hands, haha!
