What was the point of the sales guy getting mugged at someones house and then being dropped off at a random location?

shareThey weren't the hijackers. Standard was trying to spread their business into areas controlled by mafia-backed businesses. It was the Mafia's way of telling Abel "stay outta here, or give us a cut." Near the end, when Abel is cutting his deal with the tennis-playing fella (who's businesses is backed by the Mafia), he says something along the lines of "we've even looked the other way a few times when your salesmen have come into our territory."
