Those giant fuel tanks (actually big spoiler included)

Are those tanks really so flimsy that a pistol bullet could actually puncture one, after also first traveling through someone's head? Seems preposterously dangerous.

Could think of some easier ways for these guys to hinder the competition than hijacking the trucks then..

reply

No they are not flimsy. However, the USA is trying to upgrade single layered oil tank cars for railroads. They are shipping very volatile oil from shale rock. Our railroad system is already decrepit. Those doubled skinned tank cars are catching fire also in wrecks.

As a result some derailments lately have lead to spectacular fires. One fire just over the border into Canada burned up an entire town killing about 40 people The railroad immediately filed for bankruptcy.

I don't know everything. Neither does anyone else

I think you were looking for a good point. So Good Point (not being sarcastic at all)

What bothered me more than the bullet going through the tank was the oil that was leaking out. I looked more like crude or waste oil than heating oil. I delivered heating oil during the winter of 1969-1970.

There are two grades of heating oil that I know of: No.1 heating which is kerosine and is clear, and No.2 heating oil which is pretty much the same as diesel fuel which has a slight brownish tint to it. Neither one is black like tar. I can see no reason for them storing oil like that at a fuel distribution terminal. (Guess it just had more visual appeal for the movie.)

It also seemed a bit ludicrous that he could plug the hole with a handkerchief.

In other threads it had been suggested that this dark oil was the "marked" oil from Texas... meaning the Jews were also buying his stolen oil. Is that a possibility?

Furnace oil can be black.

Or it could be bunker fuel for ships.

But anyway, no one ever said the tank shot (one of many) held the same fuel(s) Abel sells.

reply

Yes, this was the Texas oil that had the dye in it

reply

“Marker” does not necessarily mean dye. (And if it was, was it black? To show what, the fuel is dirty?) I suspect it was a simple chemical marker, like used in explosives and many other things.

See my post just above with links to Bunker Fuel, which I suspect is what was shown coming out of the tank, which does not even have to be the same fuel Abel sells.

A .45 will not puncture even just a quarter inch of mild-steel (just confirmed the hunch on Youtube – gotta love Youtube), but the real deal killer was the angle shown when he pulled the trigger. The gun was pointing straight up to the bottom of his chin, and even if his head wasn't in the way the bullet might not have even hit the tank much less punctured it. So yeah, a very lame scene, agreed.
