Oscar Issac was channeling Al Pacino's Don Corleone performance
A Most Violent Year made me think Oscar Issac was channeling Al Pacino's Don Corleone performance but with an oil truck company.

shareYou are right on the money with the comparison! I thought the exact same thing while watching it yesterday. He was like a young Pacino. Thing is he's completely different in the movie Drive, so it just means this kid has some serious range as an actor.
shareIf you think about it, it makes sense. The year of the film is 1981 - nine years after the release of The Godfather. Bel Morales could very well have used Michael Corleone as his own personal role model and copied his look and his cool way of dealing with the world. Both were from immigrant families breaking into the world of crime - both trying to hold onto their integrity. I thought it was a masterful performance.
shareI think you missed the point. Abel (Oscar Isaac's character) wanted to take the high road every step of the way. He was NOT breaking into the world of crime. That was on his wife's side of the family. Abel is like an anti-Michael Corleone, or maybe like the young, idealistic Michael who rejected his father's values and enlisted in the army after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. That's what makes A Most Violent Year so unique. So many other movies are about becoming corrupted despite your best efforts. But Abel stands firm, remains uncorrupted. Hence the symbolism of stopping the leaking oil in the end.
shareYeah, OK>........
shareInteresting. Pacino didn't even enter my mind. Issac did however remind me of a younger DeNiro.
