What Exactly was Abel Guilty of?
If he was such an honest businessman, why was he so afraid of the DA coming down on him? Was it because of the actions of the previous owner (his father-in-law). This point always confused me.

shareMinor stuff like fraud and tax evasion. His wife is the CFO and she tried hiding some money the company made but I guess they found something to at least take them to court.
Its a front to make it look like they're cracking down on corruption. Sounded like he paid his employees more than he reported. Stuff like that.
Do I have to give it to you?
He didn't seem much afraid (at least until he learnt of his wife's covert activities), but a development such as this is always cause for serious worry. Even if he's never convicted of anything, the rep of having been indicted will always follow. Causes important people to lose trust and back away from him (as we saw).

The feds being on his case cost him his bank loan...
shareAs it turns out, his wife the book-keeper have been skimming the money off the top. Mony that's not reported to the tax authorities. It's a raining day fund, and how her father runs the business. It's also not legal.
shareI don't know what he was guilty of, if the DA thought he was guilty of anything, but the point I thought the movie was making is that the DA is making life hard for small businesses even if they're innocent (like a poster above said it's "a front to make it look like they're cracking down on corruption") and it's making partnerships with large businesses, which is what Abel's evolved into by the end of the movie, even if they're corrupt. I might be wrong though.
shareHe was afraid of Dr. King, Jr....😉
Can you fly this plane?
