Nightcrawler is a film I just can't get enough of, even with Jake G being so incredibly hard to watch but so tantalizing in that role. It definitely had a great retro feel BUT everything else was updated. It was the LA of today, in all its Glory, it still hides an underbelly. It had traces of Taxi Driver, Pulp Fiction and the entire "Murder House" scene was straight out of Michael Mann's 'Manhunter'... It even had the scope of 'Heat' in some ways... But it still was fresh in its storyline. For me, both films did a good job. This however wasn't just retro in feel, it was set in 1981. That year is for a reason. Similar to 'No Country For Old Men', it was a turning point. The 70's still lurked in many ways but a New World was coming. Reagan was coming along, the Economy was still in shambles but starting to boom but the Country was in one of its many transitional times. It's not easy to pin down. The music was intentionally 70's. It helped push the themes in the film.
