Looks like Christopher Nolan's directing this years American Hustle

Recycled ideas. I sure hope a blonde wig isn't all it takes for an Oscar nod.

reply

Yeah, what exactly are talking about?

reply

dankdiesel, what on earth are you talking about?

reply

OP is trying to state that this film looks like a more serious and gritty version of American Hustle which was essentially a black comedy.

reply

But what does Christopher Nolan have to do with any of this? He has no involvement in this film whatsoever. He definitely isn't the director like the OP states.

reply

So the OP is wrong on all counts.

reply

Maybe he meant to post this on Interstellar?

Ted Nugent called, he wants his shirt back.

reply

Nah, he just thinks he's being clever.

I'm not crazy about him, either.

reply

I'm not crazy about him, either.

The thing is...I don't actually mind Nolan himself, he makes half-decent films (most of the time). but I am sick of seeing his name on every board that exists on the IMDb, it's just retarded.

Even on a film such as this one, which is not related to him in any way, I have to see his name on the message board.

"I'm leaving, i've assessed the situation, and i'm going".

reply

Memento is the only film of his that I really like. But I get what you're saying. He has a lot of fans. The reason the OP started this thread, however, remains a mystery.

reply

WHAT?!?!? You didnt @ least like "Following" c'mon

reply

Couldn't even get through it.

reply

I'm no diehard Nolan fanboy.. that being said, I have really liked every movie he has done so far (I have not seen The Follow or Interstellar yet). He makes good movies. I expect good quality if his name is on it. That being said, its not worth idolizing anyone. Directors will always make both good and bad movies. Actors will always do great and terrible acting. I just take each movie as is, and judge it on that alone. Not by the director behind it or the actor acting in it.

reply

Here here (for all what you said). I saw Following, and it was ok. I can't believe no one mentioned Insomnia though. Thought it was a neat semi-psychological thriller with a bunch of actors who were more than up to par. I also liked The Prestige, but I get the feeling that the sum of posters here wouldn't. There's always an interesting underlying theme in his style. I'll stop going on bout nolan though.
Laters ..

reply

I'm quite the fan of him.
Getting pretty tired of him always being brought up and I feel nowadays specifically people seem to like to hate the man now the hype around him has calmed down.

reply

It's because there were a few actors in this movie that Nolan has used in his past movies. OP is dumb.

reply

No idea what you are talking about, but i hope its nothing like american hustle. that movie was pure ass.. start to finsih..

Reviewer here described this as anti-gangster film. Ironically, it actually felt like an anti-Nolan film and to continue in that vein it could also be the anti-American Hustle and, why not? the anti-David O Russell. Which kinda pulls Chandor out as a singular talent, as others have pointed out.
Actually, I wanted to go on one of these boards to dismiss this film as disappointing because compared to say, the best Cronenberg of the last 10 years there's some really amateurish screenwriting and direction therein + a terrible 'resolution' ending.
But in fact there's something haunting about it too - it's a nice take on American capitalism, from an immigrant perspective too, without the BANG of Margin Call. 70s NY cinema and Godfather are the references but probably the closest to it was the Iceman film recently.
Bref, I think this writer/director has something individual to say whereas Russell, Nolan- all spectacle and puffed-out hollywood drama.

"The French Revolution? Still too early to say-"

@danrayburn-997-193437 I don't know who you are but I like what you have to say.

Bbethany7 Lots of problems with this film" Number 1. I have never seen a more stygian, moodily dark cinematography than this. Everything is too dark, even in some outdoor scenes. Interiors are devoid of light. Facial expressions can't be seen, in many scenes faces are obliterated by shadow. 2. The plot is murky and oblique. It's often hard to determine who is who. Characters come and go at random without probable purpose. The supporting cast lacks texture. They're a blur.
3. Chastain seems badly used in this movie, The script leaves her stranded in semi-oblivion. 4. The main character, played by Isaac, lacks clear definition. What's going on with him? I blame the script again. I was sorely disappointed after having seen Margin Call and All Is Lost, both excellent movies. I hope Chandor's next project is better focused, in more than one sense of that word.

reply

Can't disagree, I'm not sure this writer-director has yet worked out what to do with female characters (they're pretty absent in his other films)... Like certain other elements of the narrative, the Chastain wife character is over-simplified, though she plays certain key scenes well. On the other hand, he does create, quite literally, a world of shadows where the main character is not really in control of the forces around him and so struggles to see his own reflection in them (which in itself is morally ambiguous). This seems to be the hero's purpose - to master his world - hence the juxtaposition with the other Hispanic immigrant; I thought this was, overall, fairly subtle and quite original. At the same time, I thought the melodramatic false denouement was forced, unnecessary to tie up the existential immigrant/american dream theme in such an obvious way...

Bbethany7 Chandor obviously has talent, but like every writer-director sometimes misses. Scorcese, Lumet, Coppola, even Spielberg make an occasional bummer. It's part of the game. Maybe he'll cast a charismatic firecracker like JLaw, or a skilled actor like Tom Hardy or Robert Downey to help him along. BB

reply

1. I'm going to disagree with the cinematography I loved the dark, I loved the golden earthy tones of this film.
2. Not Really it's fairly easy to follow along, Guy is trying to expand his heating oil business and it revolves around him trying to make the money to own it outright.
3. She's a supporting character, she is his wife, beyond that this is primarily about him.
4. He's in the empire business, he's trying to build an empire and get even richer.

reply

This movie was easily 10X better than 'American Hustle'.

reply

You know you're on IMDB when kids are bringing up Christopher Nolan for no reason.

reply

A) This is nothing like American Hustle.

B) Since you posted this on November 4, there's no way you had seen the movie before making snide remarks about it.

C) David O. Russell directed American Hustle, not Christopher Nolan.

D) You're a moron.
