The ending is abrupt and kind of anticlimactic. Does Isaak's character have an arc or not? Did he finally turned into a gangster or not? I understand he no longer cared for that latino guy and was ok with sponsoring the whatever ambitions attorney had, but it makes sense, nothing illegal is done and latino guy is an idiot.
I think you didn't really get what the movie's point was if you didn't like the ending. It was the conclusion of Isaak's character and his arc. He just likes to believe that he's above it all and that he's "not a gangster" and that he managed to fulfill his ambitions without having to get his hands dirty, but as the story progresses, he keeps compromising his principles more and more until there's nothing left of them. He's corrupt and preoccupied only by his success. He just never comes to realize it.

That's what I thought the movie was trying to convey. A bit better ending could have helped though. Like the Godfather ending scene, where people pledge loyalty to Mike.
On a bigger scale, Abel is kind of representation of USA, how its portray itself: hard work, straight, clear path, big ambitions and reward in the end. But at a price of blood, enormous stress and other violent mess, where only the strongest could survive and succeed. And the reason for that is black gold. Still the driving force for world economy, wars on ME, conflicts, political games, etc. even 30 years later.
An exceptional movie. Extremely thought provoking. And Isac pulls young Al Pacino. A great performance.
The guy who killed himself , what was he really guilty of in the first place? All he did was shoot at some criminals who were trying to hijack his truck
What are they doing? Why do they come here? Some kind of instinct, memory, what they used to do.
Yeah, that bothered the hell out of me. Why did he run in the first place? And when he did, was killing himself the only way out? Spending a year or two in prison at most doesn't seem worth killing yourself over? Or maybe even go free or a suspended sentence or something.
Or maybe he was an illegal alien or something and would've been deported? I don't know...
I used to like all those gritty NYC crime movies, that weren't all about Kung and Gun Fu nonsense like your typical Nick Cage or Tom Cruise movies, such as the French Connection or Death Wish. But while this movie was big on atmosphere, it lacked any real driving force to the plot. Also, no pistol bulled from an automatic is going to go through someone's head then through the plate of a tank at the bottom. Though I will make an exception for poetic license.

The movie was about getting the property and he succeeded. After that they leave it to the imagination but we're led to believe he will have a very fulfilling career.
