Absolute garbage

Saw this with my friend yesterday and we both hated it. such pretentious, over glorified nonsense - only redeeming thing was Mandy Patinkin's acting

reply

Too bad Mandy can't make a video to Zach saying: Hello, my name is Mandy Patinkin. You killed my career. Prepare to die.

Shut up.

I couldn't agree more. From the scene of the test drive on, it just got worse and worse, with one movie cliché after another offered up, and even those weren't well done. What with the quoting and the speechifying, I was a little surprised one of the characters didn't just come out and say, "Hey, we're being very important here."

In fact, it was during the test drive scene that I thought, wow, it's kind of like I'm watching deleted scenes on a DVD. Sadly for me, it felt that way a lot after that. And the ending! Or should I say endings, because that movie just wouldn't stop.

Sometimes I read a book and wonder what happened to editing. This movie's script needed a dozen more re-writes. It needed focus (no, movies, you don't have to say something about everything) and the dialogue needed some serious punching up. Don't even bother renting this one. It's the worst film I've seen in quite a while, and given the number or really bad movies I watch, that's saying something. Absolute garbage, indeed.

From my perspective, when I heard the sound of violins in a music at the beach?/rock scene and some slow motion pictures accompanied by some pseudo-philosophical statements, Zach Braff lost me. The end was better though.

Good to know, but I'm still going to rent it. Even after I read the rancid reviews, I couldn't stop watching the trailer. It's probably one of those films in which the trailer is ten times more pleasant than the actual film itself. That sometimes is the case.

reply

Heh, yeah, I do that, too. Of course, some people do like the movie. The person I went with did, but I maintain that if she'd watched it at home instead of the theater, she wouldn't have liked it. But then, she also says she liked Sex and the City 2, which we saw in the theater as well, so I can't really rely on her taste in films.

I should say, this is a movie I wanted to see, largely because of the TV trailers. If you do watch it and find that you're not enjoying it, take a look at the shot composition. There were times when the most interesting thing visually was a wig that was kind of ripped-off from Kick-Ass, if you ask me.

In the end, that might be the biggest problem with this movie. There's nothing in it that I haven't seen done better in other films. Which is too bad, because I was really hoping that I'd like it.
