Bomb or Flop?

I wonder...

FLOP!

I'm actually sad that this movie flopped so hard.

All of the Zach apologists have disappeared. I wonder if the movie did better if they'd still be singing praises.

I guess in the end, it really was just a bad movie.

Just because a movie flops doesn't make it bad. It's A Wonderful Life was one of the biggest flops of all time when it was released. I haven't seen this movie yet, but loved Garden State so am curious to see it.

If you have kids and life is *beep* and miserable, you will enjoy this way mas' than GS. I loved this movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Earth To Echo and Palo Alto.

Right. And Citizen Kane, blah, blah, blah. The difference here is we've had the benefit of decades of modern film releases leading up to this piece. Some films are just poorly made and that's that.

Something tells me Zach's movies are not the next great Christmas Classic that "It's a Wonderful Life" has turned into.

reply

Agree! I enjoyed Garden State when it came out years ago but it feels so dated and cliche now. There's too many other film makers doing it better.

Correct, and just because a movie makes lots of $ doesn't mean it is any good. This apparently was just a bad movie though, it was panned by critics and Zach couldn't get the funding from any of the studios for a reason...

I liked "Garden State" too when I originally saw it, but Zach's ego is present in that film as well. Did he really need to make another movie about a "struggling" actor on a journey of self discovery?

reply

It may not resonate with the general public but it doesn't mean it's a bad film. I also don't consider small budgeted films as 'Flops'.

What if that "small budget" was money that you received by lying to a bunch of people stating that you couldn't fund the project with your own fortune?

reply

I would apply it in that circumstance. But loosely.

reply

Honesty why does anyone give a *beep* about that? NO ONE in film uses their own money to fund films, and if they did there would only be about four or five films a year. Films are a lot more expensive than any other form of art. When a $10 Million dollar film is considered "low budget" you know how expensive films are.

Regardless, if Braff used his money to fund a film he'd be a freaking idiot. the vast majority of films flop.

Gonna watch it this weekend, Garden State is one of my favorite movies and I'm not one to change my opinion too much because I watched many other movies since then. It was not soooo long ago when you think about it. I'm hoping it's neither!!!

Guessing he never finished it.

Or it was so bad, he's afraid to post about it becuase it did change his opinion.

Guessed correctly, guess it looked too much like Garden State to me and I ended up rewatching that again since I'm not much of a kid person anyway. Man hadn't seen that in a while, looooooove the soundtrack. You guys watch Wish I Was Here?

I have to agree, that "Garden State" was really good.

Sure it's not the best piece of filmmaking ever in the history of cinema, and the ending is a little hokey, but it was well done and had a touching story. The latest one was too much of the same thing, and just cheapens the original.

reply

If the trailer doesn't get me to want to see it then I generally just don't watch something these days. A filmmaker on facebook said that even though it might not be wise to judge the movie by the trailer alone, he believes that if the images and scenes shown in the trailer which are supposedly the best the movie has to offer don't intrigue him, then it's unlikely the movie itself will either.

Glad you like Garden State though so much though, something about that movie really hits close to home for me. Guess it captures that slice of life thing pretty good. And that Shins song [;
