Way over most people's heads...

It's fine if you don't enjoy found footage movies anymore, I actually think this would have been much better if it weren't.

What is lacking though is people understanding the background of historic alchemy and literature in this film though. And not pop literature, but something most educated people have been, or should be, exposed to. That is Dante's Divine Comedy and his journey through hell and purgatory. It's pretty obvious that was what the movie was going for. It's sad to see most people didn't get it. WAY too many people taking the movie literally, and then wondering what happens with them at the end. It was obvious to me what was going on well before they entered the catacombs. I suggest many of you take a look into Dante's work. You'll see a lot of influence here.

LOL it was over my head a bit , it appeared o me they were decending into hell? Pls explain

Lol this is the most pretentious-ass post I've ever seen about a horror movie.

I know right? I just read 4 pages on how reading Dantes work would help you understand the film and never seen one reason why, it just turned into an intellectual cock measuring contest. As was said on the first page the film explains EVERYTHING that's going on.

They continually climb down, reach Hell, face their inner demons, then jump in a hole that leads UP. The camera flips, and they are back in Paris. They went to Hell and back. Seems pretty straight forward.

I just don't think it was done well and could've been so much better with a higher budget and a polished script. I did like the actors though, they played a good part, it was just weird that every one of them looked to be in their 20's but had degrees out the wazoo, spoke Aramaic, had extensive knowledge of the catacombs, and connections to everything they needed.

What Dreams May Come with Robin Williams was a much better representation of the journey through purgatory to Hell but it wasn't exactly horror. I wish they would make one!

It's not a matter of showing off, but, like you, I would like to see some filmmaker take on the task of filming the Divine Comedy. I don't know if it is possible, it's such a vast work. I enjoyed reading the posts that saw references to Dante. It makes me want to see the film and look for them myself.

You're correct that it wasn't a Horror, but parts of it were pretty creepy!

Gotta agree. I read through the first page of the thread, rolled my eyes and hopped back here to the end. lol

I think you're confusing me with somebody else; I won't apologize for being myself.

I agree with the first reply to the OP, there is nothing in the film that requires outside knowledge of either Dante's poem or alchemy. Everything that happens is literally said by Scarlett.

Saying 95% of people on here didn't understand it is insulting and wrong, most posts who ask questions about the film ask for explanations of specific portions of the film they did not understand. Most people seem to be perfectly capable of understanding the film.

The only part where knowledge of The Divine Comedy seems necessary is explaining the shift in gravity as they exit.

You don't need to read the Divine Comedy to understand/enjoy this movie. You're a fool if you think otherwise. In fact, the only thing lifted directly from Dante is the inscription above the "gate to hell". He was hardly the first to come up with his, exit strategy, so to speak. It's a nice parallel, but nothing more.

The Divine Comedy was at one point required reading in most high school English departments, but I wouldn't be shocked if it isn't today. It's a fantastic work, but our educational system has degraded to the point where it's probably now regarded as too advanced, or too controversial. Who knows these days.

Almost everyone who's been to school has read Dante's Divine Comedy.

Anyway, I have a degree in Medieval Literature (as well as standard English Literature), complete with several subsidiary modules on folklore and mythology, and found this boring as all hell. There's nothing in here that your average teenage black metal fan wouldn't be familiar with, so don't pretend people aren't smart enough to get it. If you can get through an Indiana Jones movie, you can get through this. And, as others have already pointed out, the references to Dante are actually minimal. In fact, aside from the basic concepts of Heaven and Hell, I only recall one (which she literally spells out for us anyway).

It's a bad movie. If you want to see a decent film along similar lines (including the found footage angle actually being utilized well), check out The Borderlands. It's not perfect, but far better than this mess.

Read almost every material it was derived from, it's still a bad movie.

While I agree that many might have missed the connections to Dante and Martinism, it is not a great movie. One thing you'll find on this site is that everyone who tells someone they didn't understand a movie, usually didn't understand it themselves and is opening themselves up to trolls. While it is true that it is ripped right from the pages of Dante's Inferno, one needn't have read it to get it. There have been plenty of stories, movies, etc dealing with it and most do it poorly. This is just another to add to the list.

I think the only problem I have, is with the way you stated yourself. So, the only reason any educated person, who understood the "complexity" of the film, could dislike it it, is because it's found footage? As someone who has read the Inferno, quite recently in fact, I got it and disliked it.

reply

As someone who understands the references quite well, you don't have to "get it" to "get it." A solid movie meant to entertain a broad audience will not require you to read esoteric (and, yes, I called the Divine Comedy esoteric) in order to enjoy it. The problem with this movie isn't that it went over peoples' heads; it's that it wasn't very well put-together. You can stop acting like a snob.
