Surprisingly good (Spoiler)

I really enjoyed watching this. From beginning to end.

The athmosphere was creepy, the creatures appearances and body language etc. Paris used as the filming location was a good choice. Although they could have gotten rid of the "spooky kids". Too old. Come on, does every horror movie have to involve dead kids walking?

I'm generally not a big fan of "authentic" footage like this but this was quite out of the ordinary. Definitely recommend it.

One question though, did they really have a short visit in hell?

What was with the people singing and dancing before they got deeper down the system?

Were they actually dead or some kind of worshippers?

3 questions then.

Yes they really did have the visit through hell.

I loved this and I normally don't like found footage either. I think they were in hell, but I don't know exactly where that started. It seemed that they were on the edge the very first time they entered the catacombs on that tour. Maybe it was their impure intentions, but the guy in the catacombs that told them to go to the club and find Papillon disappeared strangely. Then as they entered the club they see that very strange woman who proceeds to eyeball them. I don't know then what she was. But, that scene with her and the others chanting reminded me of Green Inferno, where the cannibals make up a woman with that same red makeup over the eyes and white powder on the skin. Green inferno was an homage to Cannibal Holocaust which was the first found footage film I think, but not all found footage like Blair Witch. Maybe it's reference, or maybe it's just meant to be creepy, but I have a feeling that it's very intentional, I just don't know exactly what it means.

Did you notice that the woman walking out of the club looked like the woman leading the chanting too? Freaky. Loved all the connections to the true history weaved throughout the film. I was inspired to visit the actual catacombs after seeing this and went last week (I live in the USA). It was awesome. The only part I recognized from the tour we went on was where the walk in the "empire of the dead" through the 2 pillars.

I do believe they entered hell in this film at the point that they had to crawl through the tunnel, as they read the inscription that is meant to be on the outside of the gates to hell, "abandon all hope ye who enter here" and the crawling on the bellies part.....creepy! I don't even believe in hell ;)

Papillon's comments made it seem like the people down there werent that unusual to run into. If they had been ghosts or something, he would have been more freaked out.

I can't answer any of your questions, but I was wondering: when Scarlett discovered the black statue in the beginning she started seeing her father right after, so maybe their hell experience was not triggered by the catacombs but by Scarlett's presence, or her quest? Benji saw the mysterious woman before they entered the catacombs (we can assume that she's the ghost from his past that he feels guilty about). So there's definitely more at work than just a strange place.

I usually don't like these shaky camera movies but this one was well done. Reminded me of Final Prayer.
