Claustrophobic Scene (Spoilers)

The scene where Benji is stuck in the tunnel for some moments (between the bones and the ceiling) is my favorite part in the entire movie. That segment really conveyed discomfort and hopelessness without relying on cheap gimmicks such as obvious jump scares. The slightly tilted camera combined with the acting and slowly increasing tension worked fantastically. Well done!

Did anyone else appreciate this scene?

If the Descent didn't do it better and the movie didn't decide to rip it off of this movie than maybe just maybe I would have thought it was cool.. but I felt more claustrophobic when I was watching the Descent.

I agree... totally! :) As I wrote in some other thread:

Most of the other time (the caving claustrophobic parts), the movie seems like a rip off of The Descent (and/or AVP: Alien vs. Predator)

I actually thought ASSB did this particular scene better because of the gritty, close up shot of Benji. It made the scene feel even more claustrophobic. I love both movies though.

Totally agree. This was the only part that scared me. Then again, I'm extremely claustrophobic and having my body stuck in a confined space is one of my biggest fears, let alone being surrounded by human bones and rats. (When I was a kid I let my friends pile sand on me at the beach until I was buried up to my neck. I completely flipped out when I realized I couldn't move. And thus my phobia was born.)

Completely agree. I started getting uncomfortable the more he started panicking, and actually thought to myself they've done a really good job with this scene.

I've seen both Descents too, and neither made me this uncomfortable.

"Well...I've seen enough. Come on Charlie, we're going home."

It was that escalating panic that felt so real. I know that feeling all too well: you think you're okay, then you start to feel like you can't breathe, your heart is racing, trying to relax only makes it worse, and then your brain goes into complete panic mode as you struggle hopelessly against whatever is restraining you. Well done scene. The tension is perfectly captured by the actor. It was the scariest scene, and with no need for special FX.

Yeah, that scene with Benji made my heart race from feeling claustrophic just watching it.

reply

Yes, I was really uncomfortable watching that scene.

reply

I'm not really claustrophobic and I was squirming pretty badly during that scene. It was really well done but I couldn't wait for it to be over.

I agree this was a very well shot, and uncomfortable scene to watch. I felt short of breath and started to fidget. There is a film called The Borderlands that has as even worse claustrophobic scene, nearly made me hyperventilate!

reply

Yeah this scene was truly horrifying, it felt like I was stuck there with him. I had to distance myself from it a few times.
