It certainly did. If you've ever read that Save the Cat book about screenwriting, the first Ride Along is about the only movie that author can ever bring himself to talk about. Besides his own empty-headed script, of course.

Unless you're Scorsese or Tarantino or Inarritu or Abrams or Linklater or Payne or Anderson or, well, Anderson your vision will likely end up in a garbage can.

Movies like Ride Along are totally uninspired, color-by-the-numbers drivel, but they're what the big-time producers wanna see.

Simply put, they're crappy movies that make a crap-ton of money.

Whatever business it ended up doing, it was intended as counter-programming... Not everybody is a geek or a cinephile/masochist... This was intended to hoover up any audience that were not grabbed by the other two, and it looks like it's doing pretty well for itself, so the tactic worked.
