Laurie didnt recognize Michael in Roswell cause in her Universe he didnt play in that show. Also the crew thought she was a spanish yoga instructor she wasnt. The weird stuff happened before they got to the house eg blonde girls phone breaking.
IF, and this is a big "IF", the cellphones crack when the cellphones, themselves, operate too close to their doubles (the cellphones, a la Primer's dialog about cellphone-doubles)... it would suggest that Doubles (and their phones) are meddling before we even meet the cast!
Enjoy these words, for one day they'll be gone... All of them.
I think this is right, too. Amir had to be, also - they arrived together. They must have passed through that nearby dark spot, the real door to nowhere, on the way to the house.
"Whaddya mean, what's next? Why does everything have to have a next?"
I agree, has to be right. They were delayed - had to be a director's note that actor had to bring up. Second clue - he didn't look like the guy from Roswell - too specific not to be a note for the actor. Very cool!
I very strongly disagree. The concept is that, due to the comet passing over their city, closer to earth than ever recorded, this phenomenon caused a split in reality or simultaneous realities happening at the same time. This means, everyone who is married to someone in any one reality is married to the same person in all realities. Basically, there was only one version of people and events up to the point where the phenomonon kicked in and caused multiple versions of what's happening now. The point when this phenomonon actually started is up for debate but most likely, since there was the cracked phone clue, right before everyone arrived at the house. That said, I could still be wrong. I had to wonder a little why Em and hubby weren't getting along so happily as they were in other realities which could mean separate realities have existed all along but the comet passing just made them overlap or intersect or whatever. Either way, I'm not buying into the Roswell and yoga thing. Both Laurie and Mike were being jerks to each other from the beginning so she pretended not to know he was an established actor and he pretended to confuse her with another girl Amir dated.
There was no "pretending" from her. She simply did not recognize him.
She said she was a huge fan of the show. He wasn't being a jerk to her when she first got there, her being a fan of the show and seeing every episode, you'd think she would have initially said, "OMG, you're from that show I love!" - You could tell, she was trying very hard to join in on a lot of conversations and get those around her to accept her. That would have been a brilliant way.
So the theory that she was just taking a shot at him gets thrown off. There is certainly some hints there realities were already mixing.
Well I know this makes sense but I think the writer was giving us a clue to the mechanics of this movie's universe when he speaks through Michael near the end of the movie. When Hugh confronts Michael about the affair with Beth, Michael says that everything before that night is exactly the same in all the universes, that he "f##ked Beth" in all of them. Can't see why the writer would throw that in there otherwise. No?
The thing is, most if not all lines in the film were improvised. They did have notes, and it is possible that the writers wanted something very akin to this line stated, but even so, what the characters say is not gospel. Your take was my original reading as well, but the clues rapidly piled up stating that something even more extreme might be taking place.
Happy House shows pasts were in fact different before the comet appeared. Em's phone cracking shows that different pasts were already in play before she arrived at the house. This is why Laurie doesn't remember Mike on Roswell. In her past, he wasn't.
Did anyone else notice that in the Happy House Em has decided to go to Vietnam with Kevin? Whereas other houses it seemed as if Em and Kevin weren’t together at all, or not getting along.
Add: also, I noticed that one of the friends in the happy house mentioned to Em something along the lines of “what will the dance company be while you’re away” (not a direct quote- but I picked up something like that) in the first house, Em made decisions that didn’t end her up in the dance production at all, and she also never agreed to moving with Kevin
@Bobby
Dude... good catch. I did not think about that aspect.
I think the main idea was hidden in the opening credits.
Cracked phone signifies a beginning of comets influence, so from right there every theory is right.
