Why did the cop give Forrest money when he visited him in the jail?

One thing I did not understand was why did the cop give Forrest money when he visited him in the jail. Can anyone explain? Thanks.

OK, here is the reason: Forrest left the cop John Hunt a personalized $100 bill at one of the robberies (see 39 minute mark of movie). The cop John gave it back to Forrest at the end as a way of letting go of the case.
