What was his motivation?

The one drawback in this nice gentle film was the lack of explanation for Forrest's behaviour. Why did he rob banks? He never seemed to spend his money or use it to invest in something. He just seemed to do it out of habit or maybe something darker. The film never digs deeper into his character.

I thought they made it pretty clear that he was doing it for the thrill.

He did it for a thrill? Didn't he know that eventually he would be in jail?

They did explain it in the movie. It wasn't even alluded to or implied, it was stated explicitly. He did it to feel alive.

Not sure how it was even possible to miss it.
