Was the rock not in the main chunk of the movie due to scheduling clashes? Seemed like they just gave him the injury in order to write him out of the middle of the film.

To be fair, you have to remember that a lot of the filming took place in 2013, before Walker's death, and he was filming Hercules at the time. So that was one reason why he was not in the film that much.

Hercules wrapped before they even started filming Furious 7. If I remember correctly, Furious 7 was supposed to start production in the Summer of 2013 but since Rock wasn't going to be able to be in the movie due to Hercules being filmed at the same time, they pushed filming back to September after Rock was finished.
